Missing Student Policy

Any time a student is suspected to be missing and reasonable attempts to contact them have failed, a missing student report must be filed immediately with the Office of Campus Security.

  • If a University official outside OCS is notified first, they are responsible for ensuring the report is filed with OCS. The supervising OCS officer on duty — a Captain or Sergeant — can immediately begin an investigation and coordinate University resources.

If the missing student lives in university housing, Belmont policy requires notification to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department within 24 hours. Students may designate one or more emergency contacts who will also be notified of investigation updates — any contact information provided is kept confidential.

The University is required to notify custodial parents or guardians within 24 hours for any residential student under the age of 18 who is not emancipated, in addition to any contacts designated by the student.

To file a missing student report, call OCS immediately at 615-460-6911.
