The Department of Biology at Belmont University offers a variety of programs and courses to engage students in the process of "doing biology."* Our goal is to introduce students to the excitement of scientific research, the aesthetic pleasure of studying the living world, and the importance of biological principles as they affect the human condition.  In doing so, we prepare students for a variety of biology-related careers or advanced studies in graduate or professional school.

If you are interested in the life sciences, then the Biology major at Belmont University is the place for you! The B.S. degree in Biology can be tailored to meet your interests and career goals. Students choose one of seven different emphases within the biology major:

  • General Biology Emphasis: Provides flexibility in tailoring a biology plan of study for various educational and career opportunities.
  • Pre-Health Emphasis: Prepares students for professional programs such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, nurse practitioner, dentistry, physician’s assistant, medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science.
  • Ecology and Biodiversity Emphasis: Equips students for careers or graduate programs in wildlife, natural areas, and research.
  • Marine Biology Emphasis: Tailored curriculum to prepare students for careers or graduate programs in the study of marine organisms, their behaviors, and interactions.

Pipetting solutions, counting bacterial colonies, training zebrafish, identifying insects, sampling salamander populations, growing plants, measuring blood pressures, running DNA gels, graphing, documenting, attending conferences, preparing presentations, collaborating, creating, pursuing learning -- doing Biology!
