A new library display invites the Belmont community to explore the biblical virtues behind the SOUL framework.
Now in its third year, Belmont’s SOUL framework has grown from a guiding idea into a lived expression across campus, and the library is creating an opportunity for readers across disciplines to engage more deeply.
What is SOUL?
SOUL is an acronym that brings together intentional behaviors and biblically rooted virtues for wise living. Inspired by 3 John 1:2, which reads, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in good health, just as your soul prospers,” the framework encourages members of the Belmont community to Seek Excellence with humility, Offer Gratitude with joy, Unleash Hospitality with love, and Live the Dream together with hope.
While these behaviors are aspirational, it can be difficult to know how to practically live them out in daily life.
The “Reading with SOUL” display addresses that challenge by connecting the community with research and commentary on the biblical virtues of humility joy, love, hope and wisdom that anchor each dimension of SOUL.

“Each of these virtues connects to countless titles from a variety of Christian traditions and authors,” said John Witvliet, chief officer of missional initiatives, who helped coordinate the display. “These resources unpack the meaning of biblical virtue, which adds unique value to every discipline.”
A campus-wide collaboration
Witvliet partnered with a team of librarians at Lila D. Bunch — Gypsy Moody, Sue Maszaros and Caroline Fleming — to create the physical display as well as an online collection of titles and a robust digital research guide.
“The display, the online collection and the research guide are all ways that the library fulfills our mission of being a catalyst for the discovery, creation and dissemination of knowledge,” said Gypsy Moody, systems and metadata specialist for the Bunch Library.

For the team at Lila D. Bunch Library, the project reflects both institutional alignment and personal investment. “Seeing the SOUL framework themes repeated across campus creates a sense of cohesion and consistency in messaging,” Moody said. “This awareness deepens as readers engage with texts related to their virtues of interest.”
The display extends beyond its physical location through a digital collection and research guide, ensuring the full breadth of resources is accessible online at any time. Visit the Lila D. Bunch Library to see the display or browse the online collection and resource guide through the Library's website.
