Sydnee Floyd’s nonprofit Jumbled Dreams partners with CARES program to support community

Belmont alumna Sydnee Floyd came to Belmont as an honors student determined to keep her 501(c)3 nonprofit, Jumbled Dreams, afloat while pursuing her degree. Years later, that determination — paired with close faculty mentorship in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences — has resulted in a donation of 9,000 pairs of socks to Belmont’s Flourish mobile clinic, serving Nashville’s most vulnerable neighbors.

“My Belmont professors have been pouring love into me since I came to campus as a freshman,” Floyd said. “Their continued support has allowed me to grow Jumbled Dreams and support the Flourish clinic in a really powerful way.”

At 13 years old, Floyd created Jumbled Dreams to be a volunteer access point where people of all ages could be connected to service opportunities in their communities. Today, the nonprofit oversees an anti-bullying campaign, hosts packing days for toiletry kits, snack bags and emergency items and has partnered with over 30 organizations worldwide to organize volunteer assistance.

Faculty Mentorship Providing Opportunities

Connections Floyd made as a public health minor, including with Epidemiology Assistant Professor Dr. Laurie Gavilo-Lane, encouraged her to relentlessly pursue growth for her organization. A nonprofit owner herself, Gavilo-Lane allowed Floyd to work with Jumbled Dreams in the classroom while also facilitating industry connections right on Belmont’s campus.

“Dr. Gavilo-Lane’s class is really where I saw my work and Belmont’s mission align for the first time,” shared Floyd. “She’s also the one who told me about the Flourish clinic. I felt so seen when we would talk about the nonprofit world and our shared experiences.”

Belmont's Flourish mobile clinic, an initiative of the University’s Center for Abundance, Resilience, Excellence and Spirituality (CARES), provides mobile health care services while giving students hands-on clinical experience. Made possible by a grant from the State of Tennessee’s Opioid Abatement Council, the mobile clinic enables faculty and students from CPHSGordon E. Inman College of Nursing and Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine to engage in direct service to the community.

Gavilo-Lane approached Floyd about partnering with CARES when the Flourish clinic was in its infancy. Having worked with Floyd for several years, she not only knew the capabilities of Jumbled Dreams, but she knew Floyd’s passion would be the ultimate asset.

“Sydnee embodies what we hope for in the next generation of health leaders,” said Gavilo-Lane. “She is analytical and disciplined in her scientific thinking, yet unwaveringly compassionate towards those experiencing homelessness and those at risk.”

A Gift that Continues to Give

At the same time the Flourish clinic was launching, Floyd received her annual donation of socks from community partner Bombas, a clothing basics brand that also benefits those experiencing homelessness.

Having been gifted 10,000 pairs of Bombas socks in a variety of sizes, Floyd donated 9,000 of them to Belmont for use with the mobile clinic, recognizing a need for quality clothing among Nashville’s population.

“Being able to give out socks is really exciting because clothing often gets missed when organizations source donations,” shared Floyd. “My intention was for Belmont to give the socks to whoever they could, for as long as supplies last, to as many people as possible.”

To date, the Flourish mobile clinic has donated 2,700 pairs of the Bombas socks to the greater Nashville community in addition to routine clinical services carried out by student clinicians and licensed professionals. The clinic’s multifaceted outreach exemplifies Belmont’s continuing commitment to innovative learning, compassionate service and community health through interdisciplinary teamwork.

“Watching the Flourish team really pour into something they’re so passionate about is beautiful,” said Floyd. “It speaks to the heart of the Belmont community that they have this dedication to provide quality care.”

What began as a student’s determination to sustain her nonprofit has grown into a lasting partnership — one that continues to serve Nashville through Belmont’s commitment to compassionate, community-centered care.
