Belmont alumnus Tim Rosko, a 2012 graduate of Belmont’s music composition program, is now a successful industry professional with a multifaceted career. We spoke with Rosko to understand how Belmont guided him in his journey to being a successful composer, voice actor, sound engineer and songwriter.
Looking back on his childhood, Tim Rosko can’t recall a time when music wasn’t playing in his household. He went from being an audience member at his older sister's performances to joining the choir himself. From there, the doors for more performance opportunities continued to present themselves. “Once I was bitten by the bug, you couldn’t pull me away,” he shared.

Time at Belmont
Rosko's powerful desire to sing, perform and create drew him to Belmont. Driven by his deep love for learning, he went beyond graduation requirements to explore a wide range of musical disciplines, from classes in classical composition and voice to music technology, arranging and jazz. He didn’t know it at the time, but these experiences laid the foundation for his future career: one that blends musicianship, technology and creative leadership.
“Though it was incredibly challenging at the time, learning those extra skills was helpful for my life and career,” he shared.
Along with an ambitious academic schedule, he was actively involved beyond the classroom as a founding member of the Belmont acapella group “The Beltones."
“In addition to the great community and fellowship of making music together, I learned through practice how to lead an ensemble both in rehearsals and as a part of an administrative team,” he shared.
A Defining Breakthrough
Following graduation, Rosko’s career expanded as he stepped into the professional music and sound design world.
He started working as a composer and sound designer at Schell Games in Pittsburgh. There, collaboration and versatility were essential to the creative process. Working in the gaming industry allowed him to merge his musical background with technology and storytelling.
Often juggling multiple projects at once, he was intentional about dedicating time and energy to each.
One project in particular stands out as a defining moment in Rosko’s career: the virtual reality game “Expect You To Die.” While initially working on sound effects for the game, Rosko and his colleagues were presented with the opportunity to create a James Bond–style opening theme. Although the idea was not originally planned or budgeted, the team believed in the project’s creative potential and brought it to life.
The result was an award-winning theme song that showcased Rosko’s ability to combine composition, performance and technical skills. “It was the first moment in my career when I realized how all of my education and training could manifest in the world,” he shared.

Navigating an Ever-changing Industry
Though Rosko faced ups and downs on his journey, he was able to overcome them by remembering everything Belmont taught him both inside and outside the classroom.
“One of the main challenges I’ve faced in my career has been the uncertainty of an ever-changing industry and economy,” he shared. “My career has been full of unexpected twists and turns. My time at Belmont taught me that I am so much more than my career alone and there is more to life than just the work I produce.”
Advice for Current Students
When reflecting on his own career journey, Rosko encourages current Belmont students to resist limiting themselves to a single title or skill. He emphasizes the value of curiosity –– reminding students that creativity often lives in the overlap between disciplines and that being open to new interests can lead to unexpected opportunities.
Most importantly, he urges young artists to allow their careers to have moments of growth, rest and reinvention.
“You can’t expect your flowers to be blooming or your trees to bear fruit constantly,” he explained. “That’s not how life works. There are periods of life where you need to tend to the soil and plant new seeds. And, there are times when you need to prune branches and remove dead leaves.”
It’s this mindset, shaped during his time at Belmont, that continues to guide his evolving career and inspire the work yet to come.
