Celebrating the legacy of longtime University friend, philanthropist, Christ-follower
Friends, family and members of the Belmont community gathered in Belmont University’s McAfee Concert Hall to honor and celebrate the extraordinary life of Barbara Massey Rogers, Sept. 13. A dear friend of Belmont, her legacy is deeply woven into the University’s history.
A Lifelong Bond with Belmont
Barbara’s enduring connection to Belmont began with her father, Jack C. Massey, whose vision and philanthropy helped sustain the University through its most challenging years. Building on that foundation, she carried forward the Massey fam
ily’s commitment to education, innovation and faith. Through the Barbara Massey Rogers and Jack C. Massey Foundation, the family’s generosity has transformed campus, providing the foundation for growth and innovation that willcontinue to serve generations to come.
“Over the years, Barbara could be seen at many events and functions on our campus celebrating our students, faculty and staff and countless University milestones,” said President Dr. Greg Jones. “Always seen in her signature blue, Barbara’s presence was felt at Belmont by so many.”
A Legacy Across Campus

Barbara and her family legacies can be seen and felt across campus. The Massey and Rogersfamily legacies — intertwined through the life and essence
of this remarkable individual — are honored through numerous namesakes: the Jack C. Massey College of Business, Jack C. Massey Center, Doyle Rogers Distinguished Chair of Law, Massey Performing Arts Center, the Barbara Massey Rogers Center, and numerous endowed student scholarships, among others, all leaving an indelible mark on the University.
Her support touched nearly every college, including business, law, medicine, pharmacy and music and performing arts. In addition to her support of Belmont’s academics, Barbara was patron of the arts. She delighted in seeing students prepare to share the joy of Christ’s birth in Christmas at Belmont each year.
“Barbara was a champion for Belmont's values — the Christian mission, the excellent academics, the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit and the pursuit of God-sized dreams,” saidAssociate Vice President for Stewardship Kate Mosley. “She gave her time, talent and resources from her heart with humility and gratitude. She loved deeply and expressed that passion to all who knew her.”
Barbara’s influence extended well beyond her philanthropy. She faithfully served as a Belmont trustee since 1996 and was instrumental in shaping the University’s vision for the future, including its law school. Just three years ago, Barbara received an honorary Doctor of the University degree — the highest designation Belmont offers — in recognition of her generous support, faithful involvement and unflagging encouragement to all who call Belmont home.
A Lasting Impact
With a gentle spirit and generous heart, she lived out a legacy of faithful devotion and pointed all who encountered her toward Christ. Her compassion and encouragement lifted those around her, reminding them of their worth and potential.
Whether serving a family member in need or offering a word of encouragement to a friend, Barbara embodied humility and selflessness. Her faith was not passive; it was active, contagious and rooted in love.
“We will long remember and treasure Barbara’s extraordinary faithfulness to Christ, her leadership and friendship and her smile and the twinkle in her eyes,” said Jones.
Barbara is survived by her children and their spouses, eight beloved grandchildren and extended family including her sister-in-law, nephew and numerous cousins.
Even in her passing, Barbara’s heart for Belmont is evident. In lieu of flowers, donations were designated to Belmont’s Annual Fund and the Jack C. Massey College of Business Excellence Fund, ensuring her legacy of generosity and vision continues to uplift students for years to come.
Barbara Massey Rogers will be remembered for her devotion to Christ, her boundless generosity, her love of family and her steadfast belief in the transformative power of education. Belmont gives thanks for her life, her friendship and her transformative impact.
