The Challenge

Like many public health students, Cartwright began her academic journey with one professional goal in mind, but needed an environment that would support her as she discovered her true calling.

As a first-generation college student, she required mentorship and guidance to navigate academic life while exploring varied career paths within health care.

The Solution

Cartwright found that Belmont's public health program offered three key elements crucial to her development:

1. Personalized Mentorship

"The small size and personal approach of the staff in the public health department has been so helpful in helping me define my career goals,” said Cartwright. “Their guidance and the opportunities they provide have significantly shaped my professional identity."

2. Supportive Faculty Network

"The faculty is always ready and willing to make a letter of recommendation, reach out to someone in the field of interest you want to go into and even provide mentorship to get you to the next step,” said Cartwright. “Dr. Christian Williams has also been invaluable when it comes to advising me and helping my college career as a first-generation student."

3. Holistic Development Opportunities

"I have loved my time on Belmont's Speech and Debate team which has provided great experience in public speaking and also helping me learn how to tell my story,” said Cartwright. “I also love Belmont Navigators for Bible study; it's been so important to grow my faith while at college and finding a group of people who are looking to do the same is so exciting.”

The Results

Cartwright has discovered her true calling and developed essential skills for her future:

  • A shift from pre-med to pre-law, focusing on health care advocacy
  • Enhanced public speaking and storytelling abilities through Speech and Debate
  • Strengthened interpersonal skills vital for her future career
  • Spiritual growth alongside like-minded peers

Key Takeaway

"Belmont has given me the opportunity to change explore my passions and switch from pre-med to pre-law so I can advocate for those less fortunate in the health care world,” shared Cartwright. “I believe that health care should be accessible, and the public health program and faculty have played a vital role in who I've become and who I hope to be. From here to anywhere is Belmont's motto and this is so true!"
