Award recognizes University photographer's decade of capturing Belmont's spirit with compassion and grace
Belmont proudly recognized University Photographer Sam Simpkins as the recipient of the 2025 Gabhart Award. Since joining Belmont in 2016, Simpkins has spent nearly 10 school years developing heartfelt connections across campus while documenting the moments that define the University's spirit.
The Gabhart Award, named in honor of Dr. Herbert C. Gabhart who dedicated 50 years of
service to the University as president and chancellor, is the highest honor presented to a staff member. The award recognizes significant achievements, commitment and service to Belmont.
"There is no question how much Sam cares for this place and our students, our faculty and staff," noted one nominator. "He exemplifies our SOUL framework and what it means to unleash hospitality. He brings so much joy and caring to his work, and I can't imagine a better Belmont ambassador."
In his role, Simpkins skillfully captures the defining moments of university life, from milestone celebrations to quiet everyday interactions that reveal Belmont's character. But his impact extends far beyond his lens — colleagues describe him as someone who serves with humility and genuine love for others.
"He has such a pure heart and is consistently warm, kind, optimistic, present, patient and caring," reflected another nominator. "He has a special way of making others feel seen and understood."
Another colleague emphasized Simpkins' compassionate approach: "He is one of the most selfless and joyful people that I know. He is an example of what it means to be a Christ-centered employee at Belmont."
Simpkins’ nominators highlighted how he has significantly shaped the campus community through his work. "Since his first day on campus, he has demonstrated that it's not about him and it's not even about just the individual he is capturing; it's about the collective spirit of Belmont University."
Simpkins consistently goes above and beyond to document life at Belmont. Earlier this year, he reflected on his decade of service at Belmont in a heartfelt piece about the moments and people who have shaped his journey here.
“As I reflect upon my life, I often wonder if the pictures I take are doing enough good in this community. Aside from my marriage, this photographic journey has been the highlight of my life,” Simpkins shared in his reflection. “This job has never just been about taking pictures. It's been about capturing life, laughing and smiling with campus and telling the story of a community I deeply love.”
