Biography

 

Dr. Mary DeRaedt is a counselor educator, licensed professional counselor, clinical supervisor, and trauma specialist with more than two decades of experience across higher education, clinical practice, and global mental health. She serves as Chair of the School of Mental Health Counseling at Belmont University and is committed to preparing counselors who integrate clinical excellence, ethical leadership, and a deep understanding of human resilience. Prior to joining Belmont, she served as Director of the Master’s Program in School Counseling at George Washington University, where she led program development, clinical training initiatives, accreditation efforts, and student success initiatives.
Dr. DeRaedt’s teaching, scholarship, and service focus on trauma, resilience, humanitarian mental health, and counselor wellness. She has taught graduate and doctoral coursework in trauma and crisis intervention, clinical supervision, counseling theories and techniques, diagnosis and treatment planning, family therapy, and practicum and internship experiences. Her international work includes training, consultation, and program development across Uganda, Afghanistan, Lebanon, and humanitarian response settings with an emphasis on culturally responsive and sustainable mental health interventions.
In addition to her academic and clinical work, Dr. DeRaedt developed the Care for Creatives program in partnership with the Washington, DC city government to expand access to mental health support and promote sustainable wellness practices for creative professionals. Her current interests include trauma-informed care, emotional regulation and stress modulation, posttraumatic growth, and innovative approaches to preparing counselors to support individuals, families, and communities.
