Biography

Dr. Kevin Smith received his M.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine as well as a Ph.D. in Molecular Physiology. During his matriculation, he studied the regulatory domain of Calcium/Calmodulin Protein Kinase II under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Soderling. He subsequently completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Vanderbilt. He also earned a Master of Management in Healthcare degree from the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management. He has practiced primary care internal medicine in Nashville since 1996, first at Saint Thomas West Hospital. He then continued his practice at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, prior to joining the faculty at Frist College of Medicine in 2022. He has been very active in teaching medical students and internal medicine residents at Vanderbilt both in small educational groups and inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. He was awarded the Hugh Jackson Morgan teaching award as the best ambulatory teacher as voted on by the internal medicine residents. He was also awarded membership in Alpha Omega Alpha as a Vanderbilt Alumni inductee. He was awarded the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians Tennessee Chapter in 2019 and Mastership in the American College of Physicians in 2020. He has been named a Castle Connelly Top Doctor in Internal Medicine since 2019. Dr. Smith has also been very active in physician advocacy serving as president and chairman of the board of directors of the Nashville Academy of Medicine. He was elected president of the Tennessee Medical Association for 2020-2021. He continues to serve on the TMA Legislative and Bylaws Committees. He also serves on the Governor’s Council of the Tennessee ACP chapter and as a delegate to the TMA House of Delegates. His clinical interests include management of hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases as well as prevention of cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
