Carter Murphey

Biography

Carter Murphey is an adjunct instructor of electric bass and commercial upright bass at Belmont’s School of Music. Murphey earned both a Bachelor and Master of Music in Commercial Electric Bass from Belmont, studying under instructors Roy Vogt, Craig Nelson, Adam Nitti, and Stephanie Dickinson Graham. Murphey’s graduate thesis was a stylistic analysis of the bassists of Miles Davis, which he presented as a lecture recital at Belmont’s Massey Performing Arts Center. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Music Education from Liberty University, with the topic of his dissertation focusing on the applications of artificial intelligence on music pedagogy.

Outside of Belmont, Murphey has been active in Nashville’s music scene for over a decade, performing in a wide range of styles including rock, country, R&B, funk, jazz and classical music. He has recorded and performed with numerous artists including Sheryl Crow, Adam Pascal, Denyce Graves, Judah & the Lion, Kevin Max, Shawn Camp, Lisa Stewart, Duffy Jackson, Danny Gottlieb, Bob Reynolds, and Bob Franceschini. He has made appearances at Music City Roots, the Jazz Education Network Convention, and the Victor Wooten Center for Music and Nature. Murphey also teaches classical double bass at Lipscomb University and previously taught electric bass and double bass at Tennessee State University.
