Serving Others. Shaping Policy. Advancing Global Health.
From the operating room to the Senate floor, Senator Bill Frist has lived a life dedicated to service. Together with Dr. Greg Jones, he reflects on the intersections of medicine, and public service, sharing what it means to lead with compassion and purpose.
His journey is a testament to the power of hope and the impact one person can have when they dedicate themselves to the well-being of others.
“To other people, I’ve had four different careers, but to me it is really one central organizing principle,” Sen. Frist shares. “And that principle is to lift other people up through service.” This candid reflection underscores how his experiences in medicine paved the way for a career in public service built on the belief that saving lives transcends party lines.
This episode covers…

- How he applied his medical expertise to policymaking and crisis response
- His ongoing mission to improve global health and community well-being
“Medicine and healing and caring and lifting up other people can serve as a currency for understanding and empathy. ”
A Calling to Heal and Serve
Sen. Frist’s path to medicine was clear from a young age, inspired by a deep-seated desire to heal. He recalls growing up in a household where medicine was a frequent topic of conversation, as his father was a well-respected physician.
That early exposure instilled in him a deep reverence for the practice of healing, which ultimately led him to pursue a career as a heart and lung transplant surgeon.
Throughout his medical career, Sen. Frist was on the front lines of life-and-death situations, often pioneering complex procedures. Reflecting on medical trips to do surgery in Sudan, a then war-ridden country, he says, “The fighting would stop around us. It would stop within several hundred yards of us initially, and then within several kilometers of us. And as we went back year after year after year, fighting would stop within 50 miles of us,” emphasizing the impact medicine can have on peacemaking.
His work in the operating room taught him invaluable lessons about patience, precision and decision-making under pressure — skills that would later become critical in his role as a policymaker. Medicine, he notes, is more than science; it’s about understanding the human condition and offering solutions that restore both body and spirit.
Bridging Medicine and Politics
Transitioning from surgeon to senator, Sen. Frist brought his medical knowledge to the highest levels of government. He initially had no aspirations to run for office, but he recognized the growing need for leaders who understood the intersection of healthcare and policy. Encouraged by mentors and a sense of duty, he took a leap of faith.
During his time in the Senate, Frist was known for his hands-on approach to leadership. Whether addressing the nation during crises like the anthrax attacks or championing funding for global HIV/AIDS relief through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), he consistently relied on data-driven decision-making rooted in his medical training.
His ability to break down complex medical issues into actionable policy made him a trusted voice on healthcare matters. Sen. Frist also advocated for bipartisan collaboration, believing that improving public health should transcend all divides.
“We all came together and passed a piece of legislation,” he emphasizes. “There are 26 million people alive today that would not be alive without the generosity of the American people.”
A Legacy of Global Health Advocacy
Even after leaving the Senate, Frist has remained steadfast in his commitment to global health. Rather than stepping away from public service, he redirected his focus toward philanthropy and international medical initiatives. Through the Hope Through Healing Hands foundation, he has worked tirelessly to expand access to healthcare in underserved communities around the world — addressing issues from maternal and child health to clean water accessibility and disease prevention.
"When you witness the disparities in medical care firsthand, you understand the urgency of the work,” Sen. Frist shares. “What that taught me is that medicine and healing and caring and lifting up other people can serve as a currency for understanding and empathy.”
These insights have driven him to perform surgeries in remote hospitals, advise governments on building resilient healthcare systems, and mentor the next generation of medical professionals.
Sen. Frist believes that true leadership is about lifting others up — ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to the care they need. His mission remains clear: to heal, to serve, and to inspire hope through every platform available to him.
