Frequently Asked Questions

Office of Accessibility Services

Here are some questions we are frequently asked. If your question isn't answered, feel free to reach out to us directly at 615-460-6407 or accessibility.services@belmont.edu.

IEPs and 504 plans will not be directly sent to the university, nor will a student's accommodations. Students will need to specifically request the IEP/504 information be sent from the high school to the Office of Accessibility Services or to the student and complete the Accommodation Request Application. As different accessibility laws apply at the college level and college accommodations are focused on access as opposed to success, students may not always be eligible for the same accommodations at the post-secondary level.

IEPs and 504s are helpful, but additional information from a medical provider will be needed to review accommodation requests. Please review our Documentation Guidelines for more information on what documentation is needed.

Students who have not already completed their orientation meeting should email accessibility.services@belmont.edu to schedule the meeting. Information on downloading LOAs will be covered in the orientation meeting.

Students who have already completed their orientation meeting should email accessibility.services@belmont.edu for information.

Students only have to complete the orientation meeting one time. Situations that may require an additional meeting include:

  • Students requesting additional accommodations
  • Students returning to campus after an extended leave

Students only need to submit documentation when they initially apply for accommodations or if they are requesting additional accommodations.

Students wanting to make an adjustment to the accommodation plan should email accessibility.services@belmont.edu. A staff member will let the student know if additional information/documentation is needed. The student may be asked to schedule a meeting to discuss the request further.

Accommodations are not retroactive. If you believe you need accommodations, please reach out to the Office of Accessibility Services early to begin the registration process.

Students currently registered with OAS and receiving accommodations should meet with their professors and provide the Letter of Accommodations at the beginning of the semester to discuss accommodation arrangements.

Students who have submitted an application, but need to make changes, should email the changes to accessibility.services@belmont.edu. The system will not allow students to submit more than one application.

No. Individuals are not required to share medical information with instructors (i.e. diagnosis or medical documentation). Students should share only the information they feel comfortable sharing that may help faculty understand their access needs.
