What Is Pre-Law?

Get a deep understanding of the legal system and prepare for law school. Pre-law isn’t a major, a program, or a subject you study — it’s simply your intention to apply to law school after finishing your undergraduate degree, and any Belmont major can prepare you to do it. Law schools don’t require a specific major, so pre-law students at Belmont are found across nearly every program on campus, from Political Science to Music Business to Nursing. Whatever you choose to study, we’ll help you build the skills and experiences law schools look for, opening doors to careers in law, business, entertainment, healthcare, government and beyond — and any Belmont student, in any major, can take the LSAT and apply to law school.

If you choose a want a major built specifically around legal preparation, Legal Studies is Belmont’s designated pre-law major — it’s designed for students who already know they’re headed to law school, and you may be able to complete both your bachelor’s and your law degree in just six years through the accelerated 3+3 path.

What You’ll Learn

Law schools don’t require a specific major, so as a pre-law student at Belmont you can choose your own path based on your interests.

Whatever major you choose, we encourage you to take a variety of classes, including courses that build your critical thinking and writing skills. It’s also a good idea to take courses in government, sociology, philosophy and literature.

From there, you can dive deep into areas of interest like international law, music industry contract law, criminal justice, poverty and justice, communication law, entertainment law, copyright law or eco-justice and faith.

Student Opportunities

Get practical experience and expand your network. As a pre-law student at Belmont, you’ll have many opportunities to get involved.

• Get courtroom experience. As a member of the AMTA Mock Trial team, you’ll build valuable skills by competing in mock trial tournaments across the country.
• Join the Pre Law Society. Meet classmates who share your interests and attend speaker panels, discussions and lectures featuring legal professionals, scholars and law students.
• Compete on the national stage. As a member of the Speech and Debate team, you'll sharpen your public speaking and argumentation skills — the team has claimed eight consecutive state titles.
