Why Major in Music Therapy? 

Belmont's Music Therapy Program provides a challenging education for the development of competent, comprehensive and compassionate music therapists with both classical and commercial skills.

Our program achieves competency in the field of Music Therapy through diverse, high quality academic experiences and clinical training. Belmont’s program develops comprehensiveness through a grounding in cognitive behavioral orientation, while at the same time introducing students to a variety of theoretical approaches within the field.

Instruments of study within the Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy are Voice, Viola, Violin, Cello, Classical Bass, Harp, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion, Organ, Piano and Guitar.

Students will choose their preferred instrument of study as either a classical track or a commercial track.

What You'll Learn

A female student playing a drum and laughing.Belmont’s Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy includes eight semesters of coursework plus a six-month internship.

Following the successful completion of all required coursework and the internship, you'll be eligible to sit for the certification exam administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). Upon successful completion of the three hour examination, you'll be awarded the credential of Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) from The Certification Board for Music Therapists and will be ready to be employed as a music therapist. This credential is accepted in all states and territories of the United States.

The School of Music has a board certified Clinical Practicum Supervisor who supervises undergraduate practicum students within a variety of populations and sites including assisted living, acute care addiction treatment, at-risk adolescents and developmental disabilities.

The Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy at Belmont University is approved by the American Music Therapy Association.

Career Possibilities

The use of music as a healing and therapeutic agent is a growing field, and Belmont’s Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy is designed for those students who wish to empower and inspire others through engagement with music.

Belmont music therapists have opportunities to work with a variety of clients, such as stroke patients in medical hospitals, recovering addicts in psychiatric facilities & rehabilitation centers, hospice & palliative care in nursing homes and service to special needs children in public schools.

If interested, this degree also facilitates the pursuit of more advanced academic training through graduate programs in music therapy across the country.

Program Details

Curriculum

Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy majors complete 145 hours of coursework over the course of their undergraduate career. This includes an array of courses that gives our students the necessary training for industry success.

  • BELL Core Requirements: 38 Hours (minimum)
  • Major Tool Course Requirements: 4 Hours
  • Music Therapy Requirements: 37 Hours
  • Music Requirements: 58 Hours
  • General Electives: 7 Hours (minimum)

The Belmont University School of Music is a fully accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

All programs in the School of Music require an audition. The audition determines admission into the School of Music, which is separate from the University's admission decision.

After submitting the Application for Undergraduate Admission, applicants to the School of Music will receive an email prompting them to complete the Undergraduate School of Music Audition Registration Form in their BU4U account. They will choose their intended in-person audition date or the video audition option.

The School of Music does not prescreen for any of its programs.
