Spring break mission trip to Costa Rica highlights impact of philanthropic support

Belmont’s Exercise Science program in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (CPHS) was given the opportunity this year to send 10 students to Costa Rica during a series of spring break missions, bringing care to communities in need through food delivery, church maintenance and outreach to a local school.

For many of the students, this was their first experience doing mission work abroad. Navigating language barriers, appreciating new cultures and collaborating with members of the community weren't just teachable moments. They developed meaningful memories and deep bonds with the community and each other — something not found in a classroom setting.

“These students are getting to live out the mission of our college and university in ways that just aren’t possible by sitting in a classroom,” said Holly Huddleston, chair of the Exercise Science Department. “Experiences like this help form caring, competent students from the outset.”

This transformative experience was made possible by a $20,000 donation from the Vultee Charitable Foundation, which will continue to benefit students who want to serve in missions for years to come. The funding supports travel and program costs for students who otherwise may not have access to global mission experiences.

For the Vultee Charitable Foundation, the investment reflects a deeper calling to support student formation through service.

“In making this gift, we know it’s not about us or even the foundation,” said Vultee Board Member Phil Henry. “This is a clear expression of God providing a way to support a wonderful cause. I’m humbled we can be a part of this incredible opportunity for student development.”

With the financial support, exercise science students now have opportunities to serve local communities in Costa Rica each year — building on this spring’s trip and extending access to future cohorts.

Service Learning, Personified

Service learning is a core component of Belmont’s Exercise Science program, emphasizing hands-on experience, interdisciplinary collaboration and community impact. Opportunities like this allow students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings while gaining perspective beyond their own communities.

Giving that experience to as many students as possible while abroad is, for Huddleston, where the significance of service learning truly shines.

“I can’t think of a more impactful way for students to learn than through service abroad,” said Huddleston. “Mission work develops deep humility and resilience in students because everything they do or encounter is an educational experience. I hope we can continue to expand this gift for many years to come.”

With continued support from partners like Vultee, more students will have the opportunity to take part in life-changing work and have their own lives changed as well.
