How clinical excellence and global perspectives built the confidence for a career in pediatric emergency nursing

For senior nursing student Daria Sickler, her time at the Inman College of Nursing has been one of continuous growth, discovery and purpose. As she approaches graduation with a nursing degree and Spanish minor, Sickler reflects on the experiences that have shaped her into a confident health care professional ready to make her mark in pediatric emergency nursing.

Building Expertise Through Clinical Experience

During her junior year, Sickler completed a pediatric nursing rotation at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, an experience that proved transformative in developing her patient connection skills.

"Working with children requires not only clinical expertise but also the ability to communicate effectively at a level that matches their cognitive and emotional understanding," Sickler explained.

During this rotation, she discovered a talent for building trust with young patients by encouraging them to ask questions and express concerns.

"I found that I could tailor explanations of their care in ways that empowered them, fostering a sense of control in an otherwise unfamiliar and often intimidating environment," she said.

Her senior year brought another defining experience through her preceptorship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Adult Emergency Department. In this fast-paced environment, Sickler applied the full breadth of her Belmont education while developing critical thinking skills under pressure.

"I was involved in life-saving interventions, where I stabilized patients in critical conditions, ensuring they could be transferred to specialized units for advanced care," she shared. "Equally important were the moments spent comforting patients experiencing fear and anxiety, helping them navigate the uncertainty of a diagnosis."

Global Perspective Through International Study

Sickler's academic journey extended beyond Nashville when she participated in Belmont's study abroad program in Valladolid, Spain, during the summer of 2023. This experience not only enhanced her Spanish language skills but provided a new lens through which to view health care systems.

"This experience allowed me to advance my Spanish medical terminology and conversational skills, while also taking days to visit hospitals, participating in simulations and exploring the significant differences between the health care systems in Spain and the U.S.," she said.

The immersion sparked a personal mission to address language barriers in health care, leading Sickler to pursue a medical translator license.

"My goal is to improve communication between health care providers and patients, particularly in Spanish-speaking communities," she said.

Recognition and Responsibility

Sickler's academic achievements at Belmont have opened doors to unique opportunities, including speaking at the Tennessee Healthcare Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony as a scholarship recipient.

"This experience was an honor and a remarkable chance to engage with influential leaders in health care," she shared. "The event brought together individuals who have made groundbreaking contributions to health care facilities, the Tennessee community and the nation as a whole."

Getting the chance to interact with these industry professionals expanded her perspective on the intersection of health care and community service, reinforcing her commitment to creating transformative change in her future career.

Mentorship That Makes a Difference

Among the many influences that have shaped Sickler's Belmont experience, Dr. Amy Rasmussen stands out as a particularly impactful mentor.

"From the very first day of freshman orientation, Dr. Rasmussen's enthusiasm and genuine excitement for us was evident," Sickler said. "Her unwavering confidence in us as nursing students instilled a sense of belief in my own potential, which has guided me throughout my time at Belmont."

Their relationship is a perfect example of the power of meaningful mentorship built on mutual vulnerability and trust.

"Whether discussing complex nursing topics, seeking advice on balancing my academic and personal interests or simply reflecting on my aspirations and challenges, she was always there with thoughtful insights and support," Sickler said.

Looking Ahead

As she prepares to graduate, Sickler acknowledges the profound development in her self-awareness, confidence and professional identity that occurred during her time at Belmont.

"When I first began my nursing program, I was eager but uncertain, unsure of my potential and how my skills would ultimately translate into real-world practice," she said.

But now, four years later, Sickler approaches her future with newfound confidence.

"I have learned that nursing is not simply a profession but a calling — one that involves lifelong learning, emotional intelligence and the ability to inspire hope and healing in others."

As she's grown at Belmont, Sickler has gained clarity about where her nursing journey will take her next.

"I now see an exciting and limitless horizon for what I can achieve as a nurse," she shared. "My experiences at Belmont have not only enhanced my clinical skills but have also empowered me to pursue my passion for pediatric emergency nursing with a sense of purpose and determination."

Sickler's time in the nursing program demonstrates how the University prepares nursing students not just with technical skills, but with the emotional intelligence, global perspective and confidence needed to make a meaningful impact in health care. From pediatric wards to emergency departments and from Nashville to Spain, her experiences have shaped a nursing professional ready to bring compassionate, skilled care to those who need it most.
