Politics & Public Law

  • Keidron Turner
The Political Science Department is quite frankly an awesome program to be a part of here at Belmont! Political science courses stand apart from the average classroom setting by allowing students to socratically discuss challenging political concepts with fellow classmates on a regular basis. This teaching style gives each and every student a deeper interest and connection to the material that a simple reading of the text can't provide. To add to this, each professor's immense connection to the political/legal community provides countless opportunities for students to partake in, from working within the state capitol to traveling to Washington D.C.! I promise you will feel right at home here in the poli sci family!

Belmont University's Department of Political Science offers the many advantages of a small private college atmosphere.

The Politics and Public Law major offers interdisciplinary classes in politics, business, and philosophy.  Students in this major are exposed to both qualitative and quantitative reasoning. All classes are taught by highly qualified professors who place the undergraduate experience at the center of everything that they do.   Special emphasis is placed upon teaching, advising, and robust student interaction. Each student in the PPL major are offered individual guidance and mentoring.  Undergraduates are also offered the opportunity to pursue research and to intern in major political organizations at the state, national, and global levels.

The upper-division courses in the PPL major usually range in size from ten to thirty students. This type of environment cultivates an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual respect.  In addition, professors work closely with students outside of classes as advisors for the law school admissions process.

The ultimate goal of the Belmont program is to provide a rigorous and challenging course program that cultivates the skill sets that are necessary for legal education.  In recent years, our majors have landed at such prestigious law school as the University of Chicago, the University of Virginia, Cornell University, and Vanderbilt University.  The successes our students have enjoyed after graduation in their professional or graduate school experiences tell us we are achieving these objectives!
