Welcome Week Schedule

WELCOME WEEK SCHEDULE 2018

New students will attend Welcome Week sessions from August 18-21, 2018. Welcome Week is a mandatory for all new students and is designed to facilitate the transition into the Belmont community. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the Saturday night and Sunday morning Welcome Week events (see schedule below). All Welcome Week events from 11am on Sunday through Tuesday night are student-only sessions.

Students will be placed into a small group with 10-20 new students on Saturday night. This small group, known as your Tower Team (TT group), will be lead by a current upperclassmen student, also known as a Tower Team (TT) Leader. Your TT Leader has been trained to guide you through Welcome Week and the remainder of your first year.

MOVE-IN

New students will move onto campus on prior to Welcome Week. Due to the complex nature of moving 2,000 new students onto campus, all students must arrive on their assigned day and time. In mid-July, move-in day information will be sent to all new students with your move-in time.

WELCOME WEEK SCHEDULE

Friday and Saturday, August 17 & 18

Welcome Week Check-In | Parents & Students

9:00 AM - 4:30 PM | Maddox Grand Atrium

Once you have officially moved into your Residence Hall, all students must officially check-in for Welcome Week on either Friday the 17th or Saturday the 18th. At check-in, you will receive a Welcome Week schedule and the number for your Tower Team.

 

SATURDAY, AUGUST 18

President & Board of Trustees' Picnic | Parents & Students

Enjoy complimentary dinner with your fellow classmates and their families. The Belmont community will be bustling with the excitement of live music and great food! In case of inclement weather, event will be located in the Curb Event Center.

Main Opening Session: "Welcome to Belmont" | Parents & Students Welcome

Welcome to Belmont! You've finally made it, and we are excited for you to be a part of our community. Join the Orientation Council, President Fisher, Dr. John Delony, and Tower Team Leaders as you learn more about the amazing journey you are about to begin.

Tower Jam | Students Only

This high-energy kick-off event is just you... and the other 2,000 new students joining the Bruin community together. You won't want to miss it.

Tower Jam Part II: Meet Your TT Group

At this time, students will meet their TT Group. Each TT Group consists of 10-20 new students and is led by a Tower Team Leader (an upperclassman). Jump in on the fun and get connected to your Bruin community!

Catholic Mass
9:30 - 10:30 PM | Janet Ayers Academic Center University Chapel

Catholic Mass will be held in the University Chapel and is open to anyone wishing to participate.

Begin your Sunday Towering Traditions experience with a time of worship and celebration! This meaningful time of song, prayer, scripture reading and short meditation from our University Minister sets the tone for the academic year. All are welcome for this time of reflection and celebration.

Matriculation Ceremony | Parents & Students Welcome
9:45 - 10:30 AM | Curb Event Center

Each year, Belmont University welcomes its new students with a Matriculation Ceremony to signify their acceptance into the school's academic program. Students recite the Community Commitment and Academic Integrity Pledges--which are commitments to themselves, to their peers and to the University.

Parent Dismissal

At this time, we start our student-only portion of Welcome Week. Parents, we ask for you to plan travel accordingly to leave campus by 11:00 AM allowing your student to fully participate in Welcome Week.

A little competition never hurt anyone. This afternoon, your 2018 Orientation Council will be hosting one of the largest Facebook live events in Belmont's history. All incoming students will team up and compete against one another in various rounds of trivia, Family Feud, and more.

Main Session 2: A Community of Stories | Convocation Credit w/ Belmont ID

It is time for your first student-only main session! To kick things off, join us as Dr. Syb, University Ministries, Dr. Mary Clark and the Orientation Council explore the power of stories.

Church Fair
4:00 - 5:30 PM | South Lawn outside of the Curb Event Center

Now is the time to get plugged into a local church! The office of University Ministries has invited more than 60 different local churches (representing various Christian denominations) to campus to give you a chance to meet church leaders, talk with Belmont students involved at each church and begin the process of finding a new church home.

Dinner
4:30 - 6:30 PM | Harrington Place Dining

You'll eat with your Tower Team group during dinner, have the opportunity to visit the Church Fair and have a little down time before evening activities.

Main Session 3: Storytelling | Convocation Credit w/ Belmont ID

Stories have power: stories connect us, stories shape us and stories inspire us. As you enter the Belmont community, you are bringing your story into the Belmont story. And now, your story is colliding with other people's stories. We believe this collision of stories is beautifully packed with possibility. In this session, we will explore past stories colliding with present stories shaping our future stories.

If you have not yet registered for courses, you will need to attend this course registration opportunity. By the end of this two-hour session, you will have your fall semester course schedule ready to go. Make sure to know your MyBelmont login information for this session.

Music Placement Assessments
8:00 - 10:00 AM | Wilson Music Building 121

Music Placement Assessments are for Music Majors only. If you have auditioned and been accepted to the School of Music and declared music as your major, you must arrive promptly to take the music assessment. The results of the assessments provide information related to the planning of your academic schedule. These placements are for both August orientation students as well a student re-takes from June orientation sessions.

Motion Pictures Safety Seminar & Safety Test | Mandatory for all MOT majors

Belmont takes safety seriously. This will be a How to Safely Run a Shoot demonstration followed by the Safety Test. Every MOT student must participate and pass the test to be able to work on any sets in the fall.

Bruin Blitz
7:15 - 9:00 PM | Curb Event Center

The biggest, craziest, loudset and most spirited Belmont Bruins fans go to Bruin Blitz. Athletic events bring campus together, so prepare to meet our student athletes, learn the cheers/changes and gear-up with free Bruins swag so you can be ready for game day. You will also learn about other involvement opportunities in this key Welcome Week Event.

Beaman Breakdown

It's time for Beaman Breakdown! Connect with 2,000 other new Belmont Bruins in this must attend event. Dancing, Karaoke, FitRec opportunities and good times await you.

Mathematics Placement Test
9:00 - 10:00 AM | McWhorter 110

The Mathematics Placement Test is for any student who expects to take several mathematics courses (primarily BBA and BS students) and who has a Math ACT below 22 or a Math SAT below 520. The test will be used to plpace you in an appropriate beginning mathematics course.

Dance Placement Auditions
9:00 - 11:30 AM | Black Box

Auditions for placement into upper leveld ance classes. Open to all students interested. Dance faculty will teach the audition class in ballet, modern, jazz and tap; students should wear appropriate attire/shoes for each style. Questions may be addressed to Debbie Belue at debbie.belue@belmont.edu

For our final main session, hear from members of the Orientation Council on making the most of the Belmont community. We will also discuss all Nashville offers as we prepare for our afternoon SERVE experience.

If you are interested in a job on-campus or working with an organization in the Nashville community, you will want to take advantage of our employment fair. Bring a copy of your Fall Semester schedule and come prepared to interview with several different representatives.

Belmont strives to be Nashville's University, and we demonstrate that through our commitment to serving our city. During this time, you will have an opportunity to visit with and serve a local organization with your Tower Team Family. (Convocation credit is received for participating in SERVE--Belmont Student ID card required).

International Student Luncheon
11:30 AM - 3:00 PM | Frist Dining Hall (Located in Inman on 4th Floor)

This luncheon is required for all new international students on F-1 and J-1 visas.

TT Family Dinner

Meet with your TT Family and enjoy a dinner together swapping favorite Welcome Week moments.

Mandatory Residence Hall Meetings

Each residence hall has a mandatory floor meeting before the start of the academic semester. Ask your Resident Assistant for more information.

Life Under the Tower

Every year, before the first day of classes, new students gather to participate in this symbolic event. This event brings the spirit of Belmont forward from past to the present as we come together "to ensure Belmont College of days more glorious and opportunities more abundant." (Quoted from a Founder's day address by Dr. Gabhart, March 11, 1963).

Opening Convocation Program

Dr. Bob Fisher, University President, will give the opening year address to the Belmont community. (One Convocation Credit received--Belmont ID required for credit.)

 

THURSDAY, AUGUST 23

BruinLink Fair
4:00 - 5:30 PM | The South Lawn to McWhorter Patio

The annual BruinLink fair is an opportunity to learn more about our Student Organizations, University Ministries, Greek Life, campus departments and more. Come join us to discover more about the Belmont community and ways to get involved! Visit bruinlink.belmont.edu for more information.
