About the Course: Belmont University is excited to host FAME-Endorsed Teacher Trainer Emily Maurek as she provides the First Steps in Music Certification Course! This course provides a bridge from research to practice by demonstrating how Dr. Feierabend's First Steps in Music; a curriculum rich in children's songs, rhymes, games, and dances; can develop musical intelligence, singing, and movement skills, and expressive sensitivities. 24 Professional Development hours are available. The course costs $550. Belmont Music Education students should contact Dr. Heath Reynolds. The course will take place from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm from June 20-24, 2023.
About First Steps in Music: First Steps in Music is a research-based, curricular framework combining the development of singing and movement skills in order to maximize musical aptitude in young children, typically grades PreK-2. The eight-part “workout” is designed to encourage musical independence and creativity through joyful activities and experiences shared with others while developing the prerequisite skills needed for music literacy: singing in tune, keeping a steady beat, and developing sensitivity to the expressive elements of music.
First Steps is a developmentally appropriate music education framework for instruction with techniques that provide pathways to meeting students where they are in their musical development, no matter the age or ability.
Housing and Meals: This year no campus housing will be offered, but there are a number of local hotels and AirB&B options. Lunch daily is included in the registration fee.
Required Textbook: First Steps in Music for Preschool and Beyond, John M. Feierabend GIA Publications Inc.
Questions?: For more information, contact the coordinator, Dr. Julia Heath Reynolds at julia.reynold@belmont.edu.
