Spiritual Life

Framework of Faith

Belmont University is uniquely student-centered. As the largest ecumenical Christian university in America, Belmont upholds Jesus Christ as the measure for all we do. We believe every student was created by God for a purpose, and that Belmont exists to help students discover that purpose and develop their gifts so they can engage and transform the world. As a Christian community of learning and service, we strive to help students grow intellectually and in compassion, courage, and faith. Our faculty, administration and staff strive to incorporate Christian ways of thinking and serving self-sacrificially into all that Belmont does. As an integral part of this commitment, we want to offer Christian hospitality to every student who comes to Belmont, be they of another faith or still searching. We are committed to making sure that every student knows that they are welcome on campus and that we love them for who they are. Put simply, we desire to set the standard for what it means to be a great Christian university.

Faith and Academics

All things have been created by Christ and for Christ, and in him all things hold together.
-Colossians 1:15

Faith & AcademicsAt Belmont, the largest ecumenical Christian university in the country, we have the freedom to engage in both faith-informed academics and academically informed faith. Belmont faculty confess Jesus Christ as Lord and are active members of churches that support that historic confession of faith. They come from the full range of denominations, so Belmont students benefit from the strengths of these varied traditions enriching Belmont’s Christian community of learning and service.

Jesus put the life of the mind and the life of service together when he said, “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Our faculty help students think deeply, and engage in mission and faith-based service opportunities in Nashville, across the U.S. and abroad. In addition, our colleges bring to campus leading authors, scientists, musicians, scholars and activists who are outstanding at what they do as an expression of their faith in Christ.

Wherever you are spiritually, Belmont is the ideal place to explore your passions and develop your talents so you can meet the world’s needs with disciplined intelligence, compassion, courage, and faith.

  • The Faculty Christian Scholarship Award and Faculty Leadership in Christian Service Award highlight our commitment to being a Christian community of learning and service.
  • Belmont is a part of the Lilly Network of Church-related Colleges & Universities, which brings together Catholic, evangelical and mainline institutions to learn to serve students better, including by providing grants to further new Belmont faith-informed initiatives.
  • Students, faculty and staff collaborate each year to produce an Advent Guide and a Lenten Guide, which is available on campus in hard copy form and on the Belmont app and website.
  • Belmont’s first Chapel was intentionally built as part of the Janet Ayers Academic Center, which is also home to our Colleges of Sciences & Mathematics, Theology & Christian Ministry, and Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, thus exemplifying Belmont’s commitment to being a Christian community of learning and service.

Faith and Campus Life

Student Life AssistantsWe know that each student at Belmont has a unique faith journey. We understand that and work to create space where we can have intentional and often challenging conversations about issues of faith. Together, we can ask difficult questions, wrestle with the answers and allow God to use that to shape us as a community.

It is our desire to walk alongside you during these years of your life and consider it a great privilege to be able to do so. We care deeply about your formation as a person of faith, and we want to invest in your development as a leader. The professional and student staff of the Office of University Ministries look forward to journeying with you during your time at Belmont.

Faith on Mission

faith-mission.jpg

Missions is not just about a trip that one goes on; it is about how one continually participates in God’s mission all throughout life. Belmont wants to empower and equip students to engage and transform the world. Our Missions and Outreach programming seeks to provide spiritually significant, vocationally relevant, and sustainable opportunities for our students to do so.

We want to give students exposure to the needs of the world and a laboratory in which to explore their place in God’s purposes. Toward that end, our philosophy of short-term missions is two-fold: 1) to create high-impact missional opportunities that are transformative and constructive for students, and 2) to create long-term, sustainable impact on the lives of people and communities being visited through responsible strategic partnerships. In order to accomplish that vision, we offer a variety of short-term mission opportunities that are both local and global, both immersive and discipline-specific, and always strategically partnered.
