Why Major in Media Production? 

class within Belmont's sound stageThe Media Production major provides you with the necessary audio and video production and postproduction skills to produce television shows, live sporting events, corporate events, music videos, promotional videos, training videos, electronic press kits and multimedia content for various media platforms. Students develop skills in both multi-camera live production and single-camera production and post-production and in audio and video streaming.

As a Belmont Media Production major, you’ll have access to the state-of-the-art facilities in the Johnson Center that houses multi-media instructional computer labs, a video production studio for both chromakey and trackless virtual studio production, a video production control room and editing suites. Our Macintosh computer labs are equipped with the latest production software including Avid Media Composer, Pro Tools, Adobe Creative Cloud and Davinci Resolve.

Curriculum

The media production major leads to either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science. It requires 128 hours of coursework:

  • BELL core requirements: 53 hours
  • Major requirements (including 18 hours of electives and emphasis area): 36 hours
  • Minor requirements: 18 hours
  • General electives: 21 hours

Courses You'll Take

  • MDS 1450 Survey of Digital Production: This is a foundational course for creative digital media production and communication across multiple media platforms. The course will introduce students to the Mac OS and Adobe Creative cloud for Audio/Video production and post-production. It will help develop essential content creation and communication skills.
  • MDS 1130 Writing for New Media: An introduction to the journalistic field focusing on the structure, purpose and function of news from story inception to completion. Students will also be exposed to storytelling for print, the web and broadcast. Ethics and legal limitations and rights of the journalist will also be introduced. Typing skills required.
  • MDS 2300 Entrepreneurial Media: A study of the business of media, startups, mobile application development and marketing. Students will present revenue models focusing on entrepreneurship and the media and develop mobile applications. Legal and ethical issues in the new media world will be addressed.
  • MDS 4110 Media Ethics: A study of the social ethic for mass communication, establishing a system of checks and balances to measure fair and truthful news and diversified entertainment. Course work involved case study analysis to help understand the roles of the communicator and the audience as individual and group.
  • MDS 2450 Remote Video Production: This course is designed to teach students the common practices of electronic field production (EFP) including preproduction, production, postproduction, electronic graphics and DVD authoring. Students will use Final Cut Pro nonlinear editing technology.
  • MDS 3450 Advanced Video Production: This course is designed to provide students exposure to advanced video production techniques and technology. Emphasis will include lighting, chromakey, color correction and HDTV. Students will be required to produce creative and in-depth productions.
  • MDS 4460 Event Video Production: This course is designed to provide students with live event video production experience including in-house media for Belmont athletic events, concerts, showcases, musical performances, television shows, webcasts and other corporate events. Students will learn multiple camera remotes are the most challenging and demanding productions, especially when they are done live. Emphases include preproduction and production.
Students will then choose courses from their area of emphasis in either audio-video production, video production, sports production or multimedia production.

Our students intern at local television stations including WKRN Channel-2 (ABC), WTVF Channel-5 (CBS), WSMV Channel-4 (NBC), WZTV Channel-17 (Fox) and WNPT Channel-8 (NPT). Students have also interned with the Nashville Predators, the Nashville Sounds, the Tennessee Titans, TNDV Television, Belmont Athletics, the Belmont University Office of Marketing & Public Relations, Vanderbilt Athletics, radio stations, advertising agencies, churches and audio and video production companies in Nashville and throughout Middle Tennessee.

You’ll even have the opportunity to participate in full-time, professional, semester-length internships in New York and Los Angeles through the Belmont USA Program.
