What is Inclusive Excellence?

  • Definition: “Making excellence inclusive is thus an active process through which colleges and universities achieve excellence in learning, teaching, student development, institutional functioning, and engagement in local and global communities.”
  • “A high-quality, practical liberal education should be the standard of excellence for all students. The action of making excellence inclusive requires that we uncover inequities in student success, identify effective educational practices, and build such practices organically for sustained institutional change.”

As defined by American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC & U)

Inclusive Excellence Strategies

  • Be mindful
  • Person first language
  • Understand that you may not always have the answer but you do have resources that can help you
  • You are not in this alone
  • It is okay to not know what to do
  • Acknowledge your own biases & work to minimize/eliminate them
  • Take time to listen
  • Take time to tell your story or part of it
  • Be open to learning and be willing to teach – in and out of the classroom.
  • Understand that if we follow the foundational values of the institution, inclusive excellence is woven throughout that fabric of your community.
