Staying Healthy in College: A Student Guide to Wellness and Success

Starting college is an exciting milestone. Along with new opportunities, classes, and friendships comes the responsibility of taking care of your physical and mental well-being. Healthy habits can help you stay focused, manage stress, and make the most of your college experience.

Whether you're living on campus, commuting, or returning to school after time away, these wellness tips can help you stay healthy throughout the semester.

Build Your Healthcare Plan Before You Need It

Unexpected illnesses and injuries can happen at any time. Knowing where to seek care before you need it can save time and reduce stress.

Before or shortly after arriving on campus:

  • Locate Health Services and learn what services are available.
    • The Health Services Clinic is located on the first floor of McWhorter Hall adjacent to the Campus Pharmacy. See Belmont's Campus Map for directions.
  • Verify that you have active health insurance and understand what it covers.
  • Keep a copy of your health insurance card in a safe place.
  • If you take prescription medications, arrange for refills and choose a local pharmacy if needed. We also have an on campus pharmacy located directly next to the clinic.
  • Stay up to date on recommended immunizations, including any vaccines required by Belmont university. This can be found in our new students information section

If you have a chronic medical condition or require academic or housing accommodations, connect with the appropriate campus offices early to ensure support is in place.

Prioritize Sleep

Sleep plays a major role in learning, memory, mood, and overall health. While late night studying may seem unavoidable, consistently getting enough rest often leads to better academic performance than sacrificing sleep.

Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night by:

  • Keeping a consistent bedtime whenever possible.
  • Limiting screen time before bed.
  • Avoiding large amounts of caffeine late in the day.
  • Taking a short afternoon nap (20–30 minutes) if you're feeling tired instead of relying solely on energy drinks.

Fuel Your Body for Success

Good nutrition helps support concentration, energy, and immune function.

Simple ways to eat well include:

  • Fill your plate with fruits and vegetables whenever possible.
  • Choose lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats.
  • Keep convenient snacks available, such as nuts, trail mix, fruit, protein bars, yogurt, or whole grain crackers.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Limit sugary drinks and excessive caffeine.

College schedules can be busy, but even small healthy choices throughout the day can improve how you feel.

Stay Active

Regular physical activity benefits both your body and your mind. Exercise can improve mood, reduce stress, increase energy, and help you stay focused in class.

Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week.

Easy ways to stay active include:

  • Walking or biking across campus.
  • Using the campus recreation center.
  • Joining an intramural or club sport.
  • Taking a fitness class.
  • Exercising with friends for accountability.

Even short movement breaks between classes can help improve concentration.

Take Care of Your Mental Health

College can be rewarding, but it can also feel overwhelming. Stress, homesickness, anxiety, and academic pressure are common experiences.

Healthy ways to manage stress include:

  • Practicing deep breathing, prayer, meditation, or mindfulness.
  • Spending time outdoors.
  • Journaling or engaging in hobbies you enjoy.
  • Maintaining regular exercise and sleep habits.
  • Breaking large assignments into smaller, manageable tasks.

If stress begins interfering with daily life, reach out to counseling services, Health Services, or another trusted healthcare provider. Support is available, and you don't have to manage challenges alone.

Stay Connected

Building relationships is an important part of maintaining emotional well-being.

Make time to:

  • Call or video chat with family and friends.
  • Meet classmates for study sessions.
  • Join student organizations or campus events.
  • Volunteer or participate in campus activities.

Having a support system can make college feel more enjoyable and help you navigate challenges more confidently.

Practice Healthy Study Habits

Academic success and wellness go hand in hand.

Try these strategies:

  • Use a planner or digital calendar to stay organized.
  • Study in shorter, focused sessions instead of cramming.
  • Schedule regular breaks.
  • Join a study group for difficult courses.
  • Ask professors or tutors for help when needed.

Balancing academics with self-care helps prevent burnout.

Prevent Illness on Campus

Living and learning in close quarters can make it easier for illnesses to spread.

Help protect yourself and others by:

  • Washing your hands regularly.
  • Covering coughs and sneezes.
  • Cleaning frequently touched surfaces.
  • Staying home when you're sick, if possible.
  • Getting recommended vaccinations.
  • Avoiding sharing drinks, utensils, or personal items.

These simple habits can reduce your risk of common illnesses throughout the school year.

Keep a Basic Health Kit

Having a few supplies readily available can help you manage minor illnesses or injuries.

Consider keeping:

  • Pain reliever or fever reducer
  • Adhesive bandages
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Thermometer
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Allergy medication
  • Cold and flu medications
  • Hydrocortisone cream
  • Reusable water bottle

Check expiration dates each semester and replace items as needed.

Know When to Visit Health Services

Schedule an appointment or give us a call if you experience:

  • Fever that doesn't improve
  • Persistent cough or difficulty breathing
  • Severe sore throat
  • Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea
  • Injuries that need medical evaluation
  • Mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, or overwhelming stress
  • Questions about routine wellness care

Seeking care early can often prevent small health concerns from becoming bigger problems.

Make Your Health Part of Your College Success

College is about more than earning a degree. It's also a time to develop lifelong habits that support your health and well-being. Eating nutritious foods, staying active, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and knowing when to seek medical care can help you feel your best throughout your college journey.

Remember, Health Services is here to support you. Whether you need preventive care, treatment for an illness, or help navigating a health concern, don't hesitate to reach out. Taking care of yourself is one of the best investments you can make in your academic success and your future.

All full-time, degree-seeking students are required to provide proof of health insurance coverage or enroll in Belmont’s Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). More information can be found here. The Belmont Student Health Insurance Support Center can be contacted at studentinsurance@belmont.edu or 866-233-4512.

Students should verify their coverage for hospitals and providers in Tennessee and carry their insurance card with them at all times.
