LEED PLATINUM: Janet Ayers Academic Center (Above) (Formerly Wedgewood Academic Center)

The Wedgewood Academic Center, home to Belmont’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, College of Sciences and Mathematics and College of Theology and Christian Ministry, was designed and constructed using sustainable practices to help reduce its environmental impact. The building earned LEED Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in May 2015, becoming the first University to achieve Platinum certification in Tennessee and the first LEED for New Construction Platinum project in Nashville.

The Center's sustainable features include an underground parking garage to reduce the urban heat island effect and preserve green space, charging stations and parking spaces for car pools, van pools, and fuel efficient and low emitting vehicles, educational and sustainable green roofs, high-efficiency plumbing fixtures to optimize water savings at an estimated rate of 200 kGal each year, LED lighting which will drastically reduce energy usage, an active chilled beam system that reduces heating and cooling energy and is one of the only HVAC systems of its kind in Nashville, and an irrigation system that collects water run-off in underground tanks, comparable in size to Olympic size swimming pools, that is re-used for irrigation and water feature purposes. – site www.usgbc.org

LEED GOLD: The Randall and Sadie Baskin Building

The Randall and Sadie Baskin Center opened in 2012 and houses Belmont’s College of Law, the first new law school in Middle image of the randall and sadie baskin centerTennessee in nearly a century. The space provides the students with court room settings, a law library, group study rooms, and the ability for the College of Law to host local judges.

The Randall and Sadie Baskin Center is a 71,000 square foot building with a geothermal heating and cooling system, utilizing 100 wells at 500 feet deep.  The automated building energy management system was installed to maintain heating and cooling to specific set points.  It incorporates scheduling of night/weekend/holiday temperature setbacks to maximize efficiency of equipment.  The building also has energy efficient double pane windows and insulated doors, as well as high efficiency water fixtures throughout the building.

LEED GOLD: The Johnson Center

The R. Milton and Denice Johnson Center houses the Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business, the media studies program milton and deniece johnson centerand a 950-seat cafeteria.  With multi-functional spaces offering classroom, lab, performance, production and research options, the 134,000 square foot building is designed for the interdisciplinary collaborations among the academic programs, including entertainment industry studies (EIS), music business, audio engineering technology (ART), songwriting, motion pictures and media studies

The R. Milton and Denice Johnson Center uses comprehensive web based lighting controls to provide flexible lighting scenes and complex on/off scenarios to maximize energy savings.  Auto dimming features included in the garage to reduce lighting requirement when spaces are un-occupied.  The state of the art movie production lighting utilizes LED fixtures which provide high intensity light without the associated wattage and heat load generation from traditional 2,000 Tungsten lighting.  The building automation system monitors CO in the garage located underneath of the center itself.  Ramps and fans up/down to provide fresh air as needed, reducing energy consumption while maximizing efficiencies. When no cars are driving in the garage, air exchanges are reduced to an absolute minimum.  Additionally, like the Baskin center, the Johnson center is fully equipped with high efficiency water fixtures, as well as energy efficient double pane windows and insulated doors.
