Economics is a diverse and dynamic field of study that challenges students to critically evaluate how systems of commerce operate both domestically and internationally. Economists conduct research, collect and analyze data, monitor economic trends and develop forecasts as they explore free enterprise approaches to solve the most pressing of social concerns.

In addition to providing an excellent foundation for graduate school, a background in economics is very beneficial for business and community leadership roles. Opportunities for economists exist in private industry, consulting firms, governmental agencies and education. Notably, the demand for workers who have knowledge of economics is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations.

Belmont’s distinguished economics faculty includes a Fulbright Scholar to the College of the Bahamas, a Past President of the Tennessee Economic Association, an Editorial Board Member for the Journal for Economics Educators, a board member of the Tennessee Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and an appointment by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to the Tennessee Export Council. Together they have traveled to approximately 30 countries, have made significant contributions to the profession, have provided advice to numerous businesses, served as expert witnesses, and enjoy sharing their knowledge with students.

Belmont students can also gain valuable experience through faculty coordinated internships in fields such as government, economic market research, banking, finance, insurance, and healthcare.

Students interested in studying economics may choose to earn either a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree.  The B.B.A. degree provides a broad business background, requiring students to take tool and core courses in the various business disciplines. The B.S. degree does not require students to take the full range of business courses but does require completion of either a business or non-business minor.  Students may even choose a second major to enhance their competitiveness.
