NEAR 48 – Quick facts

What is it?

NEAR 48 is a discipleship ministry geared towards freshmen students of the Belmont community that live on campus.  SLA’s, or Spiritual Life Assistants, are the upperclassmen leaders of this ministry.

What does it look like?

We are looking for individuals who have a heart for God and a desire to walk alongside other members of the Belmont community.  We are not looking for “perfect Christians.” Instead, we’re looking for students who have a maturing relationship with Jesus that want to be used in the lives of their fellow students.  This ministry is about building relationships and doing life together.  Our goal is to have a small group community that meets on a weekly basis in every freshmen living area on campus.  (For this sake of this quick fact sheet, a “living area” is being defined as an area that is overseen by an RA).  Since there will be 30+ RAs throughout this part of campus next year we hope to have 30+ SLAs  to lead weekly small group experiences throughout campus.

What is required of leaders?
  • SLAs will lead a small group experiences that will last approximately one hour long each week.
  • SLAs will be required to participate in an hour long training session each week.
  • SLAs will meet weekly with your SLA small group for a time of prayer before your study that evening. SLAs will meet regularly  with your SLC (Spiritual Life Coordinator) to check in and pray together.
  • SLAs will NOT live in the areas that they oversee.
  • SLAs will also not get paid as this is a volunteer position.
  • SLAs will be encouraged to spend as much time as they can, investing in the men/women in their living area through relational ministry.  It will be the time spent building relationship outside of the small group time that will enhance what happens in the small group time.
  • There will also be a training/retreat that happens before the start of both the fall and spring semester that you are required to attend.
  • In the case of special University Ministries events we may ask for your assistance with publicity or other details.
