Apply to be a 2018-19 Spiritual Life Assistant

-connecting through community, service and spiritual formation experiences-

What is a Spiritual Life Assistant?

In partnership with Residence Life, Spiritual Life Assistants (SLAs), seek to help freshmen find community within their residence halls. Each SLA will serve as part of the Spiritual Life Team for the freshmen residence hall where they serve. SLAs serve as resources, mentors, wise friends and small group leaders.
What does it look like?
We are looking for individuals who have a heart for God and a desire to walk alongside other members of the Belmont community.  We are not looking for “perfect Christians.” We are looking for students who have a maturing relationship with Jesus that want to be used in the lives of their fellow students.  This ministry is about building relationships.  Each SLA will serve on a Spiritual Life Team that will be assigned to a specific freshmen residence hall. Your ministry as an SLA would likely include hanging out with men/women in your hall, getting involved with their residence hall activities, grabbing coffee or lunch with a few of them, worshipping together, serving together as well as potentially leading a regular small group in the hall.  Truly, there is no “one-size-fits-all” for this ministry.

What is required of SLAs?

  • SLAs will spend at least 2-5 hours per week investing in the men/women in their living area through relational ministry.
  • Spiritual Life Teams will facilitate 2 community times per semester for their hall. This can include potlucks, laser tag, touch football, grabbing dinner/coffee/ice cream. Whatever you think will connect you with your freshmen.
  • Through the Into Nashville program, SLAs facilitate 1 local service/outreach retreat per semester. All logistics and training for this event will be provided.
  • SLAs will assess the spiritual needs of their hall and facilitate prayer time and small groups as they deem appropriate and will serve to connect freshmen to faith forming opportunities both on campus ( through Faith Development Organizations, Spiritual Emphasis Weeks etc) and off campus (through church involvement).

Partner with Residence Life

  • SLAs will seek to foster good relationships with the Resident Assistants (RAs) and will partner with them whenever possible.
  • Spiritual Life Teams are required to meet with the Resident Director once a month regarding upcoming events, possible service opportunities and to seek out other ways to be of service to the life of their living community.
  • SLAs will participate in any Residence Life training deemed appropriate by RD. Dates/times for these trainings will be communicated and will help connect the SLA to the overall community of their hall.
  • SLAs will be present at all Residence Life events happening on their hall.

 Additional Requirements:

  • SLAs will be required to participate in an hour long training session each week.  (Mondays @ 10 a.m.)
  • LEAD WEEK is an essential time of training that occurs the week before Move In Day of the Fall semester. Attendance is required.
  • In the case of special University Ministries’ events, we may ask for your assistance with publicity or other details
