Cultural and Economic Dimensions of the Asia Pacific Region

Need a Learning Community Cohort? Take the Study Away LCC in Maymester! You will use the island of Oahu as a laboratory to examine cultural pluralism and economic geography of the Asia Pacific Region. You will also have a student id and access to the University of Hawaii (UH), Manoa, College of Pacific and Asian Studies and have classroom, library, computer lab and WiFi network access privileges. Class-related field excursions for experiential learning activities on the island of Oahu. A partial list of sites to be visited includes: 

  • Polynesian Culture Center
  • Honolulu Chinatown
  • Pearl Harbor, (w/overnight on USS Missouri Battleship)
  • Iolani Palace and Missionary Houses at Kawaiaho Church
  • Hawaii Port Authority
  • Atlantis Submarine Tour
  • Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

Curriculum:

Students enroll in the following courses:

ECO 2015: Economic Geography of Hawaii (also counts as Social Science Gen Ed; Global Studies; Experiential Learning Credit) (3 hours)

HUM 2015: Cultural Pluralism (also counts as Humanities General Education, Global Studies; Experiential Learning credit) (3 hours)

Students may also choose the following online courses: Third Year Writing, Religion Jr. Cornerstone and/or International Business. Students are required to take at least one course from a faculty program leader and will not be allowed to take only online courses while on this program.

Eligibility:
  • Open to qualified Belmont students
  • Students can be from any discipline
  • Undergraduate students need GPA of 2.5 or above
Costs:
Costs: Program Fee + Tuition

1)     Program Fee: $5,500 

Covers round trip airfare from Nashville to Honolulu, room and board on the campus of UH (3 meals M - F, 2 meals a day Sat. and Sun.), travel to class-related field excursions for experiential learning activities on the island of Oahu, student insurance.

2)     Belmont Tuition: Tuition is charged at the special study abroad tuition rate of 1/3 the cost of normal Maymester tuition. For every 3 hours of study abroad credit you register for, you pay for only one hour.

Credits:

Undergraduate: Upon successful completion of the program, students will earn six hours of Belmont University credit.

Housing:

Room and Board on the campus of UH (3 meals M-F, 2 meals each day Sat/Sun)
