Belmont in Quebec: CLOSED

Study Canadian French at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi

Did you know that the #1 trade partner of the United States is Canada? Not Japan.  Not Mexico.  Canada, our neighbor to the north, 23% of whose population (6.7 million people!) is either French-speaking or bilingual. Envision what an asset knowledge of French would be to anyone doing business in Canada, especially Eastern Canada.  But not any French.  The French of Canada, as different from the French of Europe as American English is from that of London.

This program takes place at École de langue française et de culture québecoise (ELFCQ) of the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC).  Chicoutimi, a small Canadian city whose Amerindian name means “where the water is deep,” offers the student a 100% immersion experience.  What better place to be completely immersed in learning Canadian French than in this small Quebecois city where everyone goes about their lives in French?

Because of the total immersion nature of this program, it is best suited to students who have already studied some French and are willing to immerse themselves fully in French for the length of the program.  In fact, students sign an agreement that they will only speak French during the weeks they are enrolled at ELFCQ.  Class sizes are limited to 18 students to give each student the opportunity to speak frequently during each class day.

Excursions and Activities include:

Afternoon “ateliers” and evening “activités” are organized and led by Québecois university students who serve as “animateurs” for the program.  Students indicate their preference of “Atelier” and offerings include geocaching, ensemble musical, écologie urbaine, improvisation, blogue, cardio-sport, théâtre, conversation, slam-poésie, radio, yoga, gumboot, danse, arts plastiques, etc.  Evening activities include Québecois film evenings, improv nights, as well as “soirées” of various sorts organized by ELFCQ.
