Adjudication Process - Faculty Member
If the faculty member chooses to adjudicate the incident, s/he will
follow the procedures listed below:
1. If the student accepts
responsibility, the faculty member may determine sanctions and
communicate a response (skip to No. 6 below).
2. If the student denies
responsibility, the faculty member will conduct an inquiry, in
which he/she will determine the student’s responsibility
and appropriate sanction. A student is permitted to have others at
the inquiry to speak on his/her behalf. (This participation is
limited to faculty, staff and student members of the university
community whose names are communicated to the faculty member at
least 48 hours prior to the meeting.) Faculty members may
also bring others to the inquiry to offer information pertinent to
the incident. A student may choose to forgo a subsequent meeting
and proceed immediately with the inquiry process.
3. During the inquiry, all
documentation/materials related to the incident will be reviewed.
This includes the definitions of academic dishonesty outlined in
the Academic Honor System, tests, papers, correspondence or other
paperwork pertinent to a determination of responsibility.
4. The student may respond to the
allegation, address documentation and clarify or add other
information for consideration. Additional individuals may speak
only when called upon by the faculty member and may be asked to
leave if their conduct interferes with proceedings.
5. The faculty member will determine
if the student is responsible for the violation.
6. If the student is found
responsible, the faculty member will identify an appropriate
sanction. Faculty members may fail the student on the
project/test/paper, fail the student in the class or fail the
student in the class with an FX on the student’s
transcript.
7. The faculty member will
communicate his or her decision verbally and in a follow-up letter
that includes a description of the Appeal Process (see below).
8. All documentation (including a
copy of all correspondence, a completed Community Conduct Form, the
faculty member’s summary, copies of assignments and any
other materials used to determine responsibility and response) will
be sent to the Office of the Dean of Students to be maintained in
the student’s file.
