Confronting and Adjudicating Violations

The Belmont University Academic Honor System is designed to assist in upholding the values inherent in the Statement of Values and the Affirmation of Academic Integrity, emphasizing to all members of the university community the value of integrity within an educational community.  Any member of the university community may confront a violation of the Honor Pledge if s/he believes there is information to
support such a report.
If a student or staff member believes a violation of the Honor Pledge has occurred, s/he may:
·    Contact the faculty member in whose class the alleged violation occurred, simply to report that an infraction has taken place of which the faculty member will want to be aware.
·    Urge that person to confess the violation to the faculty member.
·    File a Community Conduct Form with the faculty member in whose class the violation occurred or with the Office of the Dean of Students. Forms are available in the Office of the Dean of Students and in the offices of all academic deans.
If a faculty member believes a violation of the Honor Pledge has occurred, s/he should:
•    Give the student a Community Conduct Form for Academic Honor Pledge Violations as notification that s/he is suspected of a violation and then meet with the student to give her/him an opportunity to accept or deny responsibility.  At this meeting the faculty member may adjudicate the violation or inform the student of the faculty member’s intent to refer it for adjudication by the Honor Court.  Regardless of who adjudicates the incident, all documentation related to the incident including the Community Conduct Form, copies of the test/paper/project, a narrative of the situation and other supporting materials should be sent to the Office of the Dean of Students.
