Health Sciences Missions Blog: Guatemala
The mission trip to Guatemala began in 2007 when God placed the desire to serve others on the heart of a mission-minded Belmont Physical Therapy student. He found support from a local charitable organization, the Shalom Foundation, and within weeks, a group of physical therapy students were off to meet the needs of a hurting people in Guatemala. Each year since then, students in the health sciences have taken their medical skills and their faith to this Central American country. Today, future occupational therapists and nurses have joined with future physical therapists on this life-changing trip.
Health Sciences Missions Blog: Cambodia
2011 marked the seventh year that the College of Health Sciences took a group of students to Cambodia. The study abroad course looked at the health care delivery system in Cambodia as 8 nursing students, 3 nursing faculty, 6 pharmacy students and one pharmacy faculty member worked on the medical and surgical wards of the Sihanouk Hospital Center of Hope in Phnom Penh. Relationships with hospital staff grew over the years and students and faculty were welcomed once again to work in the chronic care facility, observe in the operating room, assist in the emergency department, make home visits with social workers, and assist with a mobile clinic. The team also participated in a service project with the members of a non-denominational church in Phnom Penh, greatly enriching their opportunity to serve the Khmer people. The servant hearts of the Cambodian people left a lasting impact on all!
