Master of Arts & Teaching-Special Education

Purpose:
Belmont University now has a licensure program in special education. The purpose of the program is to provide quality Special Educators to serve individuals with mild/moderate disabilities.

Currently, the program is only open to those who are already teaching special education on a permit, appropriate alternative licenses or waivers. Candidates successfully completing the program will meet Tennessee Department of Education licensure requirements for K-12 Modified Special Education and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Belmont University. By participating in this consortium licensure program, candidates must make a 5-year commitment to teach Special Education in the state of Tennessee.

Program Structure:
Instruction is delivered using a tightly sequenced two-year cohort model. The next cohort begins on January 9, 2008.

Twenty to thirty students will be accepted into the Special Education Consortium during each cohort.

Practicum Supervision will occur in the candidate’s classroom.

The special education licensure program is 30 hours in length, all of which must be completed at Belmont. The State of Tennessee provides specific expectations for general education courses for all teachers. Depending on your undergraduate program, you may be required to complete some additional general education courses.
