Department Awards



The Lauren McCathren Community Service Award

This award follows in the tradition of the founders of American Sociology who attempted to understand our society via the tools of science and who used that understanding make our world a better place.  We give this award in honor of our beloved student, Lauren McCathren, who exemplified this sociological spirit through her many acts of community service. To qualify for this award, a student must be a sociology major or minor who demonstrates significant community service.  The award consists of a framed certificate and cash award. Additionally, their names will be inscribed on a plaque  in Wheeler Humanities building.


Most Promising New Sociology Major

This year’s award goes to a student who distinguishes themselves among the new majors in any given year significant by making a positive impact in their classes and in the Sociology department.  We recognize students who possess sophisticated levels intellectual curiosity and who exhibit leadership/mentorship and enthusiasm in the classroom. The award consists of a framed certificate and cash award. Their names will be inscribed on a plaque in Wheeler Humanities building.


The Sociology Scholarship Award 

To qualify for this award, a student must be a sociology major or minor who demonstrates excellent research skills and the ability to gather a substantial body of data and literature, organize and analyze them, and produce a compelling research paper  The award includes a framed certificate and cash award. Their names will also be inscribed on a plaque in Wheeler Humanities building.


These awards are given at the close of each Spring semester.
