Salvation Army Angel Tree Volunteers (October - December)

The Salvation Army, a faith-based nonprofit serving Nashville since 1890, extends a resourceful hand of assistance to families in greatest need, so that they may lift themselves from crisis to stability and independence.

Mall Booth Volunteers: Help collect gifts and give away our Angels! Positions at Hickory Hollow, Green Hills, Cool Springs, and RiverGate will be available. Mall booths will start
November 7th and will last until December 5th. Shifts will be Monday through Saturday from 10a.m. to 2p.m., 2p.m. to 6p.m., and 6p.m. to 9p.m. Sunday the shifts will be 12p.m. to 3p.m. and 3p.m. to 6p.m.

Bell Ringing: Help bring in some Holiday cheer by ringing a bell for donations. Stand by one of our many locations. This is also great for choir groups and those who love to play instruments.

Sort, Bag & Tag: Volunteer with us to sort, bag, and tag all the gifts. It takes a lot of volunteer power to sort all of these presents! Sort, bag, and tag will start on November 7th to December 5th. Shifts will be anytime between 9 and 4. The location is 811 Cowan Street, Nashville, TN 37207.

Distribution: Distribution of donated gifts will be December 15th, 16th, and 17th from 9a.m. to 5:30p.m. The location is 811 Cowan Street, Nashville, TN 37207.

Starting in October all kinds of volunteers are needed to assist in Angel Tree. We need folks to help in our warehouse, sorting gifts or manning booths in the area malls.

St. Lukes Holiday Volunteers For Toy Drive And Adopt-A-Family (October - December)

Each year, St. Luke's Community House offers Holiday Assistance Programs for families in West Nashville. Toy Store is a program that allows families to “shop” for a toy for each child in the home.  Adopt-A-Family allows entire families and senior citizens of West Nashville to complete a wish list. The family is then matched with a donor who provides gifts to the family, using the wish list.  In 2008 we served more than 940 children for Toy Store, 351 families through Adopt-A-Family, and more than 60 Seniors. In order to provide holiday cheer to our families again this year, we need your help.

Adopt Your Family or Senior (Beginning October 19): Anyone interested in adopting a family or senior should contact the St. Luke's Volunteer Manager.  However, if you are associated with St. George's Episcopal Church, please contact Liz Himes.

Toy Store Set-up Part 1 (November 30): 2-3 volunteers will meet at the Marine Corps / Toys For Tots warehouse in Smyrna to assist in loading the toys in the bus to bring back to St. Luke’s. Additionally, 10-15 volunteers will meet at St. Luke’s to unload the toys.

Toy Store Set-up Part 2 (November 30): 15-20 volunteers needed to unbox / unbag and organize the toys by age onto the Toy Store tables.

Toy Store Shoppers (December 1 & 2): Volunteers are needed to help parents "shop" for toys at the Toy Store. Volunteers should commit to a minimum of 1 hour on December 1 & 2, between the hours of 8:30am-6:30pm each day. 5 volunteers are needed at all times.

Toy Store Clean-up (December 3. 15-30): Volunteers are needed to box up, label and move all left-over toys to storage on December 4, after 11am.

Adopt-A-Family Distribution Volunteers (December 7-18): Volunteers are needed to receive gifts from donors and distribute gifts to families. These volunteers must be able to lift a minimum of 20lbs repeatedly. Volunteers should commit to a minimum of two, 2-hour shifts during December 7-18 from 9am-4:30pm. A minimum of 5 volunteers are needed at all times.

To volunteer or adopt a family or senior, please contact the Volunteer Manager, Christie Bearden.

Human Rights Letter Writing (November 18 and December 4)

Typically on Wednesdays, with occasional Friday dates, this is an opportunity for you to advance human rights by writing a letter!

For over forty years members of Amnesty International have taken action on cases of torture, execution, "disappearance," and other human rights violations by writing urgent letters, faxes, and e-mails to government officials, newspapers, and the prisoners themselves.  Thousands of victims of human rights abuses have been released or seen their conditions improve thanks to these letters.

We will provide tips on how to write action letters, information about some of today’s urgent cases, plus paper, envelopes, and postage.  Then we’ll all write some letters!  A DONATION OF ONE DOLLAR to help pay for materials and postage would be much appreciated.

This event is sponsored by the Amnesty International Belmont University Group.  For more information, please email Daniel Schafer or call (916)-460-6378.
