Annual Poetry Contest

Dollar General bvl

In 2010, Belmont began partnering with Metro Nashville Public Schools to sponsor a poetry contest in conjunction with Belmont's Annual Family Literacy Day.  First through fourth grade students are invited to submit original poems based on the current year's theme.

This year's theme for the 10th Annual Contest is "Favorite Story" and is open to students from Metro Nashville Elementary Schools.  The Deadline for Entries is 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30th.  Please contact Tim Stewart, tim.stewart@belmont.edu, for more information about entering.

Last year's theme for the 9th Annual Contest was "Favorite Story" and children in first through fourth grades in Metro Public Schools were invited to compose a 12 to 16 line poem about their favorite book or story.  Five finalists were selected by the Belmont English Club.  The Top 5 poets worked with local professional songwriters Sherrié Austin, Bill McDermott, Samuel Pritchett, Will Rambeaux and Olivia Rudeen to set their poems to music.

Last year's winners were announced at Belmont's 18th Annual Family Literacy Day. Prize money ($500 - 1st, $300 2nd, $200 3rd, $100 each 4th and 5th) was split between the poet and their classroom teacher to benefit their class.  Please enjoy last year's winners.  This year's finalists' songs will be posted for voting online line in late February or early March and the awards will be given out at Belmont's 29th Annual Family Literacy Day on March 30, 2019.
