On engaging students: "What better way could there be to teach students
a language, a culture, than to have them be of service to that
culture? That's why many of my classes have a service component.
One of my students, a pre-med and Spanish double major, translated
in a clinic for an English-speaking doctor with Spanish-speaking
patients. In a class on Cuba, all the students went into local
Cuban households to serve as English tutors and ended with
wonderful exposure to Cuban food, music, and history."
On classroom style: "Belmont allows you to grow as a teacher. As a
result, I've developed an eclectic teaching style -- really a
collection of styles, as opposed to a single methodology. That
gives me the flexibility, from class to class, to take an approach
that connects with that particular group of students. I tailor my
teaching to be effective."
