Dr. Thomas Leonard-Martin
Dr. Thomas (Tom) Leonard-Martin has spent most of his professional life in research and medical imaging services in ophthalmology, especially diabetic retinopathy. He worked in the Vanderbilt Department of Ophthalmology for over 20 years, serving on the faculty for 11 years, where he directed a clinical research center, was Manager of the Vanderbilt Eye Clinic, and also developed a program for residents in Medical and Research Ethics. During that time he taught occasionally in the Vanderbilt Philosophy Department. In 2000 he joined a start-up company developing telemedicine applications for eye diseases. He currently works as a consultant to several groups working with diabetic retinopathy and telemedicine applications.
Dr. Leonard-Martin earned a Masters of Public Health in epidemiology and clinical trial design from the Vanderbilt School of Medicine (1998); an MA (1986) and Ph.D. (1989) in Philosophy from Vanderbilt; an MA in Technology and Human Affairs (1979) from Washington University in St. Louis; and a BA in 1975 from Maryville College, Maryville, Tennessee, with an Individualized Major in Science, Values and Society. He taught High School biology before starting his graduate studies.
