Dr. Thomas Leonard-Martin

Dr. Thomas (Tom) Leonard-Martin has spent most of his professional life in research and medical imaging services in ophthalmology, especially diabetic retinopathy.  He worked in the Vanderbilt Department of Ophthalmology for over 20 years, serving on the faculty for 11 years, where he developed a program for residents in Medical and Research Ethics, while directing a clinical research center.  During that time he managed to teach occasionally in the Philosophy Department.  In 2000 he joined a start-up Company developing telemedicine applications for eye diseases.  He currently works as a consultant to several groups working with diabetic retinopathy and telemedicine applications.

Dr. Leonard-Martin earned a Masters of Public Health in 1998 from the Vanderbilt School of Medicine; an MA (1986) and Ph.D. (1989) in Philosophy from Vanderbilt; an MA in Technology and Human Affairs in 1979 from Washington University in St. Louis; and a BA in 1975 from Maryville College, Maryville, TN with an Individualized Major in Science, Values and Society.  He taught High School biology before starting his graduate studies.
