Best Buddies Tennessee: Volunteer Education and Promotion of Occupational Therapy
The purpose of this study was to address the need for additional education of student volunteers from Belmont University who work with the Best Buddies organization. Best Buddies Tennessee is located in Nashville and is a non-profit organization that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A resource manual was created specifically for Belmont’s Best Buddies chapter in order to enhance volunteer knowledge, understanding, and awareness about various disabilities and to provide guidelines and strategies that can be used to facilitate communication with Buddies. An additional component to this project was the creation of an occupational therapy booth for the Best Buddies annual Friendship Walk, which is a fundraising event to support inclusion of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
