Kate Rungee, Class of 2012

Occupational Therapy Dance Workshop
The mission of this residency was to create and implement a series of dance workshops for children with special needs who were receiving treatment at Pediatric Therapies in Cool Springs, Tennessee.  These workshops combined the world of dance and occupational therapy.  My expert mentor was Danielle Carder, an occupational therapist.  Each week I spent 8-10 hours observing the clinical treatment sessions of my dancers in order to integrate their goals (using a “just right” challenge) into the jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, ballet and tap classes that I designed and taught to them.  Each of these classes required consideration of the individual learning preferences and sensory needs of each child.  I felt that it was important to make the classes fun, social events that took place outside of the therapy clinic.  The project culminated in a dance recital at the Franklin School for Performing Arts where the children performed for friends and family members wearing T-shirts that they had created for this event.
