Sexuality and Occupational Therapy for Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury: The Unspoken ADL
The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process, 2nd Edition (AOTA, 2008) identifies sexual activity as an activity of daily living, thus this area of occupation falls within the scope of occupational therapy practice. In order to successfully integrate this critical component of occupation into the sphere of holistic occupational therapy, foundational education must be incorporated within the academic curriculum of entry-level occupational therapy programs. The aim of this residency project, Sexuality and Occupational Therapy for Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury: The Unspoken ADL, was to promote the inclusion of sexual education within occupational therapy academic curriculum. To attain this goal, an evidence-based manual was created as a resource and reference tool for students and entry-level practitioners with the focal purpose of providing extensive information relating to the areas of sexual dysfunction following spinal cord injury, secondary physical health conditions, psychological and psychosocial considerations, relationships, adaptive equipment, recommendations and resources for therapists and clients, and the resulting role of occupational therapy in sexual education and rehabilitation. Additionally, in an effort to advance sexuality curriculum at the educational level, development of educational materials relating to sexuality and physical dysfunction were implemented and presented to future practitioners in the occupational therapy assistant program at the Community College of Baltimore County, Maryland,  in an effort to expand the students’ foundational knowledge and comfort level as it relates to discussions on sexuality, sexual concerns and the delivery of sexual education.
