Establishing an AMBUCS Chapter in New Jersey
For my culminating project, I established an American Business Clubs (AMBUCS) Chapter in Ocean County, New Jersey. However, since this was the first and only chapter in the state, it will serve surrounding counties as well. AMBUCS is a national, nonprofit organization that is dedicated to creating mobility and independence for people with disabilities. My expert mentor was Joe Copeland, the executive director of AMBUCS. This project required community education about AMBUCS and recruitment and organization of a committee of volunteers to sustain the chapter. Once a Board of Directors was established, our aim was to create a list of pediatric clients who would enjoy and benefit from an adapted tricycle, the AmTryke. Children were placed on a wish list for the bicycle by attending an AmTryke Fit event hosted by our chapter. In order to successfully host an AmTryke Fit, I needed to network with local pediatric facilities and schools to find therapists, teachers, and parents who were willing to support the mission of AMBUCS, as well as host in-services where local therapists learned how to properly fit a child for an AmTryke. Throughout the duration of my residency I sought funding for our organization through grant-writing, fundraising events, and donations. It is my hope that once word of Ocean County AMBUCS spreads, other chapters will become established in surrounding counties and states.
