Developing Successful Kindergarteners
The purpose of this residency project was to create a manual for kindergarten teachers with developmentally appropriate classroom activities that align with the current kindergarten curriculum at Gainesboro Elementary School in Jackson County, Tennessee.   The purpose of the manual was to promote healthy gross and fine motor skills in order to facilitate the development of skills needed for handwriting.  Throughout the project, current literature was reviewed as it related to enhancing the skills of kindergarten students.  Classroom observations were conducted to gain an understanding of the teaching styles of the four kindergarten teachers and the specific needs of the approximately 80 kindergarten students.  A manual was created which included parent tips for kindergarten readiness, letter formation from Handwriting Without Tears, gross motor warm-up activities, and fine motor classroom activities.  The manual was presented to the kindergarten teachers as a supplement which could be used to enhance the existing Standard Core Curriculum being taught at Gainesboro Elementary.
