Data Governance Roles and Responsibilities

Data Custodians

Information Technology fulfills the role of data custodians. They are responsible for the security and availability of data.  They oversee the systems used to collect, manage and provide access to institutional data.  The primary responsibilities of a data custodian are:

  1. Maintain physical and system security including physical security of servers and data user security as determined appropriate by the Data Trustees or Data Stewards.
  2. Ensure adequate system backups and disaster recovery plans.
  3. Ensure adequate system response times and system availability.
  4. Participate in setting priorities by providing details on technical, systems and staffing requirements related to Data Governance initiatives.
