Deanna Kuhn
I can truly say that I was called into a career in Nursing. Having grown up in a very medically oriented family, (my father was a surgeon, my mother a nurse) I was bound and determined to make my own way and do something different (not health related) with my life. God however had another plan. Shortly before graduating from high school, and intending to be an architect, a close friend told me I needed to pray about my college major. It was then that I chose Nursing, and I have been blessed by the decision ever since.
I attended the University of Cincinnati and graduated with my BS in Nursing in 1984.Upon graduation I went to work briefly on an oncology floor, but soon transferred into critical care where I spent the majority of my career. I realized I enjoyed teaching during these years as a staff nurse. While some nurses would complain when they had to work with a student, I found myself looking forward to the time spent showing students new skills or explaining pathophysiology.
In 2001, I graduated with my Masters from the University of Central Florida. Upon graduation I worked on an NIH funded breast cancer study for several months before I began teaching at the Florida College of Health Sciences. Upon moving to the Nashville area in 2004, I discovered a wonderful place to work and teach - Belmont University. Currently, I take Introduction to Nursing students into the hospital for their first clinical rotation. Here I get the privilege of “hatching” dozens of future nurses each semester and starting them on a path of sound nursing practice.
