Healthcare for Vulnerable Populations: Caring for Native Americans, has been a very popular nursing elective.
The program is conducted on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, an enviornment which fosters a combination of health learning, sociocultural experience and spiritual growth.
This week long course provides a wonderful opportunity for cross cultural experiences. Every student who has participated has learned the rewards and challenges of providing holistic nursing to a vulnerable population.
Two students who participated in this course have gone on to
nursing positions with the Indian Health Service. The benefits for
these students are terrific - they are now federal employees with
grade and rank in accordance with their education and experience.
In addtion, all of their college loans were paid by the government
as part of the terms of their employment.
