Music Technology Course Descriptions:
Course Title: MUC1110 “Introduction to Music Technology”
An introduction to basic music technology applications. This course is a “Hands-On” study of music technology as a “Creative Tool” and as a “Musical Instrument,” incorporating basic technological tools used by a “Desktop Musician.”
Objectives for this course are as follows:
- Achieve basic and applicable understanding of MIDI and its usage in creating music
- Assimilate basic technological terminology used in music technology
- Demonstrate ability to manipulate (at a fundamental level) a multi-timbral synthesizer
- Utilizes computers in musical applications
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of various music related technologies and software programs
- Overview of technologies in various music related media
- Create a simple music document with aid of a music notation program
- Utilize software-based synthesizers
- Create an original MIDI-sequenced musical production
- Use pre-recorded Audio-Loops in creating an original sequence production
- Overview music software applicable to a specific major and area of emphasis
Course Title: MUC2210 “Music Technology I”
Applied study in the basic theory and operations of a “Digital Audio Workstation.” Emphases will be on utilizing technology to conceive, create, and produce musical ideas, compositions, and productions. The course will focus primarily on the creative and logistical implementations of MIDI and Midi sequencing.
Objectives for this course are as follows:
- Achieve a basic understanding of MIDI theory and terminology
- Assimilate basic fundamental principles of Midi in music production
- Develop competency in utilizing a computer-based “DAW” production system
- Comprehension of software based sequencing and sequencing techniques
- Incorporating the computer as a creative and production tool
- “Hands-On” experience with various hardware and software devices in “DAW” productions
- Produce a musical production utilizing a “DAW” production system with emphasis on Midi
- (“DAW:” is a digital audio workstation)
Course Title: MUC2220 “Music Technology II”
Applied study in the advance theory and operations of a MIDI/Audio (DAW) production system. Emphasis will be on utilizing technology to conceive, create, and produce musical productions via the use of digital audio, MIDI, and computer software. This course is the continuation of the “Music Technology I” course. More focus is placed on the use of recorded/pre-recorded audio files and the manipulation of those audio files. There is much attention placed on the musical aesthetics of DAW based productions.
Objectives for this course are as follows:
- Understanding of advance MIDI and Audio sequencing techniques
- Incorporating musicianship with technology
- Competent use of an integrated MIDI/Audio software program along with numerous other programs
- Comprehension of creating a DAW Production Studio
- Knowledge of career opportunities as a “Desktop Musician”
- "Hands-On" experience with various hardware and software devices
- Produce several musical productions utilizing a MIDI/Audio “DAW” production system.
Course Title: MUC3400 “Composing Music for Media”
A study in the art and technique of scoring music for film and other visual mediums. Emphases will be on utilizing basic technology and composing logistics to conceive, create, and produce musical productions for the visual medium.
Objectives for this course are as follows:
- Understanding the various responsibilities of the individuals who create films
- Basic knowledge of the script, and the spotting /screening session
- How to spot the film and create cue sheets
- Developing the concept for a media project
- Utilizing technology to create music for film/TV/Advertising and etc.
- Create effective composing and arranging techniques to help support the medium
- A study of past and present Media-composers in various different mediums
Course Title: MUC2180 “Computer Assisted Music Notation”
The study of traditional rules of music notation and the modern applications of those rules. Applying the use of current music technology while stressing the importance of clear, easy- to-read music manuscripts.
Objectives for this course are as follows:
- Learning classical music notation
- The use of proper arrangement of notes, clusters, key signatures. dynamics, articulations, score order, and etc.
- Learning to utilize a computer based music notation program.
- Entry manipulation, playback, printing manuscripts, creating custom designed shapes and text, chord entry, lyric entry, page layout, and part extractions.
Course Title: MBO1110 and 1120 “Applied Synthesizer”
Private lessons featuring “Hands-On” experience with a computer based DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). Emphasis will be on mastering MIDI, some synthesizer programming, sequencing, and arranging techniques. Both technical and aesthetic aspects will be explored. Lessons will be regulated towards the experience, abilities, and creative goals of the student.
Objectives for this course are as follows:
- Study in composing, arranging, and producing music with a computer based DAW
- To produce commercial and/or classical based Midi/Audio productions
- Study of software and hardware used in a DAW.
- Numerous other music related software programs will be utilized and discussed in the lessons
Course Title: MUC2150 “Introduction to Sound Synthesis”
Instruction in manipulating and navigating hardware and software based synthesizers. The course will concentrate on functions and components used within a synthesizer (oscillators, filters, envelope generators, and etc.) as well as techniques used to generate synthesized sounds (e.g. analog, FM, Granular, and sample synthesis).
Objectives for this course are as follows:
- Study in terms of electronic synthesis
- Manipulating and adjusting various parameters on both hardware and software based synthesizers
- Being able to create a sound based on various synthesis techniques
- Incorporating original sound creations within a musical production.
