MENC: The National Association for Music Education is a professional organization for in-service and pre-service music educators across the United States.
The preamble of the MENC mission statement reads, “Music allows us to celebrate and preserve our cultural heritages, and also to explore the realms of expression, imagination, and creation resulting in new knowledge. Therefore, every individual should be guaranteed the opportunity to learn music and to share in musical experiences.” The mission of MENC is to advance music education by encouraging the study and making of music by all.
Belmont University Collegiate MENC members have the opportunity to attend monthly meetings related to their future profession, to attend a music education workshop during the spring semester, and to receive journals that enhance knowledge in their chosen field of study. The national MENC organization also informs the public about the values of music education. MENC sponsors a “Music in Our Schools” month and completes a variety of public relations work. The association encourages music teachers to see their work as vital to the development of young children, and motivates and encourages teachers to approach music education as something to which every child needs exposure.
