Belmont Summer Vocal Arts Intensive

The Belmont Summer Vocal Arts Intensive is a week-long immersive experience in solo and choral singing in a variety of styles. Students entering grades 9-12 will engage in rehearsals, masterclasses, and performances with the outstanding artistic faculty at Belmont University. The Summer Vocal Arts Intensive provides a unique opportunity to experience high level artistry in both classical and commercial singing. This residential camp takes place on Belmont University’s beautiful campus in downtown Nashville, TN. 2017 Dates: June 25-July 1

We are currently on a wait list for ALL voice parts. Please submit your application to be added to the wait list, but do not include a deposit at this time. If we are able to move you from the wait list to the acceptance list, we will request a deposit at that time.

Daily Schedule

Each day, students will participate in mass choir rehearsals, electives, small ensembles, master classes, and social experiences. The mass choir will rehearse and perform a final concert of traditional and contemporary choral music. Small ensemble opportunities include Chamber Choir, Jazz Choir, A Capella Choir, and Musical Theatre ensemble. Master classes will provide solo vocal lessons in a group setting – choose from classical, commercial, or integrative tracks. Elective classes will offer opportunities to explore Choral Conducting, Diction for Singers, GarageBand, and more. Evening activities include a mix of social activities (bowling, movies!) and recitals (faculty and campers).

Housing & Meals

Students will be housed in Belmont University dormitories. Roommates will be assigned randomly by gender unless roommate requests are indicated on the registration form.  While in the dormitories, participants will be under the careful supervision of the camp staff, and security will be a priority. All meals will be served in Johnson Center Dining Hall.

The Belmont Summer Vocal Arts Intensive is open to students entering grades 9-12 in the Fall of 2016. Discounts available for participation in National, State, and Regional honor choirs.

No auditions are necessary for general camp participation. Students wishing to sing in the Chamber Choir or Jazz Choir small ensembles will sing a brief audition on the first Sunday afternoon of camp. Auditions will include a short solo and brief musicianship exercises.

Will there be transportation to/from the airport? Transportation is available. A sign-up process will be available approximately a month before camp. Details for this will be included in the camp handbook.

What are the starting and ending times on Sunday/Saturday? Check-in will be from 1-3pm on Sunday, June 25. The final concert will end at noon on Saturday, July 1. Check-out from the dorms will take place prior to the final concert, so students will be free to go after the concert.

Are there any performances that parents/family/friends may attend?

  • Friday evening, June 30, will be the Small Ensembles performance. Pending location, this performance may be ticketed. Details on this will be included in the camp handbook, with instructions to reserve tickets if necessary.
  • Saturday, July 1, the Mass Choirs will perform their concert at 11am. This concert will be open admission with plenty of seating for all.

What should my camper pack/bring for the dorm? A camp handbook will be available in May with details on everything your camper will need.

What should I prepare for auditions and masterclasses? Each camper will participate daily in a small ensemble and a masterclass. For the masterclass, campers should prepare two songs in contrasting styles. During registration, campers will be able to indicate their preference for Classical, Commercial, Integrated (Classical and Commercial), or Musical Theatre. The contrasting styles should be within these categories. For the ensembles, the camp faculty will hear each camper in a short placement hearing. Singers should plan to sing 30 seconds of one of their prepared pieces, unaccompanied. Students wishing to audition for the Jazz or Chamber ensemble will also be asked to complete a brief sightreading, which will be provided at the hearing.
